Throughout December, I’ll be sharing daily mini-tips about AEDs — where to find them, how to use them, and the small things everyone should know.
Because the more confident we feel, the more lives we can save. 💚
Let’s make December a month of safety, confidence, and community.

**18th December – AED Location**
📍 *Eversholt Village Hall*
Church End, Eversholt, MK17 9DU

Defibs should be in clear sight — not hidden away. ❤️⚡
In a cardiac emergency, every second counts. If a defibrillator is hard to see, locked away, or hidden behind doors, precious time can be lost.

Defibs should be:
✅ Clearly visible
✅ Easy to access
✅ Signposted so anyone can find them quickly

Ask yourself — IS YOUR NEAREST DEFIB IN CLEAR SIGHT?
Do you know where it is? Could a stranger find it in an emergency?

Raising awareness saves lives. Take a moment today to notice where your nearest defib is — and if it isn’t obvious, let someone know.

**17th December – AED Location**
📍 *Steppingley Village Hall*
Rectory Road, Steppingley, MK45 5AT
People of Steppingley- there are two AEDs listed in your village as available 24/7 but I could not find the second one- can you help?

AEDs should be available 24/7 — unlocked cabinets are strongly recommended.

In a cardiac arrest, every second counts. If an AED is locked away, restricted to office hours, or requires a key or code that isn’t immediately accessible, it can cause critical delays when time is the most important factor.

The Resuscitation Council UK recommends that AEDs are stored in unlocked cabinets so they can be accessed immediately in an emergency. Where security is a concern, alarmed cabinets provide a good balance between accessibility and deterrence.

Unrestricted, 24/7 access ensures that anyone can retrieve an AED the moment it’s needed — whether that’s during evenings, weekends, or outside normal working hours. Having an AED is only part of the solution; ensuring it can be reached quickly, easily, and without barriers is what truly saves lives.

What do you think — should AED cabinets always be unlocked? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

**16th December – AED Location**
📍 *Stewkley Recreation Ground*
Stewkley Recreation Ground, Soulbury Road, Stewkley, LU7 0HN

The AED will automatically re-analyse the heart rhythm at set intervals and will clearly tell you when to pause CPR.

While CPR is ongoing, do not stop unless the AED instructs you to do so. When prompted, briefly pause chest compressions so the AED can re-analyse the heart rhythm. During this time, ensure nobody is touching the casualty.

Once the analysis is complete, the AED will either advise a shock or instruct you to restart CPR immediately. Follow the AED’s voice prompts at all times and minimise any interruptions to chest compressions, as high-quality, continuous CPR is vital for survival until advanced help arrives or the person shows signs of life.

If no shock is advised, you should restart CPR immediately.

When the AED analyses the heart rhythm and announces “no shock advised”, this means the rhythm cannot be treated with a shock at that moment. Do not delay — restart CPR straight away.

Restart chest compressions immediately

Push hard and fast in the centre of the chest (around 5–6 cm deep, 100–120 compressions per minute)

Give 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths (if trained and able)

Continue CPR until the AED tells you to stop for re-analysis, the person shows signs of life, or help takes over

High-quality CPR is essential when no shock is advised, as it maintains blood flow to the brain and heart and may help the heart become shockable at the next analysis.

From 2026, the theory test part of learning to drive will include questions on CPR and defibrillators. If you were in an accident or came across one on the road, would you know what to do?

It's not just about ticking a box on a test paper; it's about feeling confident that you would know what to do if you came across an emergency and that you would be able to step in and help.

Drivers are often the first people on the scene of an accident, so it's vital to learn the skills of CPR and using an AED, and nothing teaches these skills better than in-person demonstrations and hands-on practice.

Our 2-hour First Aid Awareness Class for Adults covers heart attack, CPR, using an AED, stroke, burns, bleeds, severe allergic reaction, choking, seizures and breaks. It's informal and gives everyone who attends the skills to respond in an emergency situation.

Come and learn with us, or encourage your teenager who is learning to drive to come and learn with us today - a few hours of learning could save a life.

**14th December – AED Location**
📍 *O2 Store*
17, Silver Street, Bedford MK40 1SY

Did you spot the green sticker? You’ll find these wherever there’s a defibrillator. This one outside the O2 store means there’s a defib inside.

Nobody should touch the casualty when a shock is delivered.
Before and during defibrillation, the rescuer must ensure everyone is clear of the casualty. Touching the person at the moment a shock is delivered can interfere with the shock being delivered effectively and may put the rescuer at risk of injury. The AED will prompt you to stand clear, analyse the heart rhythm, and deliver the shock if advised. Once the shock has been delivered, CPR should be resumed immediately when instructed by the AED.

Heading off on the motorways or country roads to visit family and friends this festive season?

**13th December – AED Location**
📍 *Vandyke Upper School*
Vandyke Road, Leighton Buzzard, LU7 3DY

Nobody should touch the person during analysis because the AED needs a completely still body to read the heart’s rhythm correctly.
Movement can interrupt the analysis and confuse the machine. The AED can only decide whether a shock is needed if it gets a clean, accurate reading, so it’s essential that everyone steps back and avoids touching the person until the AED tells you what to do next.

**12th December – AED Location**
📍 *Kempston Town Council*
104 Bedford Road, Kempston, MK42 8BG
Note: I spoke to the caretaker of this defib as it is currently showing unavailable on defibfinder- this is because they are awaiting a new battery. As soon as they have a replacement it will be available again.

After an AED delivers a shock, you must restart chest compressions immediately.
The shock’s job is to reset the heart’s rhythm — but it won’t start beating strongly on its own. CPR keeps blood flowing to the brain and vital organs while the heart recovers. Don’t pause to reassess, don’t wait to see if they “wake up” — go straight back into compressions until the AED tells you to stop for the next rhythm check.

Hello! My name is Elaine and I am your Mini First Aid trainer here in Bedfordshire. I qualified as a nurse more than 30 years ago and have had a long career in the NHS. I have spent those years working as a midwife, a neonatal intensive care senior sister and for the last 14 years as a health visitor. My career has involved me working alongside many thousands of new parents as they negotiate such significant life changes. I have a wealth of knowledge and experience at my fingertips to share with you! As a parent myself – of two- now young adults, I am passionate about giving children the very best start in life. I know first-hand how parenthood can throw the unexpected challenge at any time and so how important it is to have the knowledge and skills to meet those challenges. This includes how to manage crises or emergencies that could arise with you baby or child. Would you know what to do if your baby or child was choking. Would your child know who to ring if you stopped breathing? Also important is equipping your child to know who to turn to and how to raise the alarm should a grown-up need emergency first aid. I am confident that our Mini First Aid courses are just what is needed to support all parents, including new and parents-to-be, grandparents and all carers ensure their children get the best start in life and I am looking forward to bringing this service to families in Bedford and Bedfordshire.
