🤔 What happens after the assessment comes to an end? Some people will be given a diagnosis and will need some time to think and processes what this means for them and their life (even if they have suspected they were autistic for years). Other people will not receive a diagnosis at the end of the assessment and this might leave them wondering “where next for me/my child”.

🔮 It can be hard to go through an assessment processes without knowing what’s going to come at the end. I tell every person that walks into my clinic room that I believe them when they’re telling me that they experience the world differently to others. I believe them when they’re telling tell me their child is overwhelmed by school even if these behaviours aren’t present at school. I believe them when they’re telling tell me that they need more support for their family.

🔍 As a clinical psychologist, it’s my job to be a bit like a detective. I collect lots of evidence that helps me figure out what is going on for you. This might be autism, ADHD, and it might be something else (or all of the above). You won’t leave my assessment feeling more confused than before, even if the outcome says you don’t meet the diagnostic criteria. You’ll have a psychological formulation written just for you, and bespoke recommendations based on your needs. There are no copy and paste reports or pick lists of recommendations here!

🤰🏽 If you find yourself saying these phrases about your own experience, can we take a moment to pause and reflect?

👶🏽 I hear from many new (and not so new) parents who tell me they should just be grateful that their baby got here okay. That they shouldn’t complain about the care they received because someone else had it worse. That their birth “wasn’t even that difficult,” so they don’t feel like they should an acknowledge those thoughts that keep showing up in their mind .

💛 You don’t have to measure your feelings against anyone else’s. You deserve space to acknowledge what you went through. You’re not overreacting. You’re not alone.

👉🏻 If these words resonate, save this post to revisit when you need the reminder, or share it with someone who might need to hear it too. Join me at for a FREE birth journey session!

❤️ I’m sure you’ll have heard the myth that autistic people lack empathy. Maybe you’re autistic and wondering how you can feel so deeply when you’re heard this myth. Or maybe you’re a parent exploring whether your child might be neurodivergent and feeling confused.

🧠 The Double Empathy Problem helps us to understand why non autistic people might have perceived autistic people as lacking empathy. A mismatch in communication styles rather than a problem to be fixed. This really helps us to take a step back and view things from a less ableist perspective.

👂If you’re not autistic and have somebody in your life that is, scroll to the end for some ideas about how you might be able to view things from their perspective a little better!

👋🏻 Hello! I’m back with another book in my series on how we can use stories and books to help develop our children’s emotional literacy and psychological wellbeing.

🐿️ The Squirrels Who Squabbled 🌰 This cheeky little tale about two squirrells with very different personalities. It’s funny and tense with a happy ending! This book is really good for exploring themes around community, working together, and impulse control!

📚 I use stories every day, in my work and in my personal life, to think about emotions and relationships. Watch this video for some hints and tips on how you might explore the themes that come up in this book with your little one too.

🗣️ I see these two words being used interchangeably all the time when in fact they mean different things. Both neurodivergence and neurodiversity were coined in the late 1990s; one by an American activist and the other by an Australian sociologist.

❤️ Language is important. It helps us, and others, to understand who we are, how we work, and what we might need. Using this language helps to shift the narrative from a medical/deficit model to an acknowledgment of the normal variation in human existence! However, I know some people don’t love this language as it’s been co-opted by other groups.

🧠 We are ALL diverse because every single individual is a little bit different to the next. We are not all divergent; meaning that development differs from the majority. Let me know what you think to this language
