Sportvision involves ocular correction and protection in order to maximise visual performance in sport.
A broad understanding of sport vision was first introduced to the UK from America. At the time, this was largely based on a behavioural approach, borne out of the behavioural interest in childrenโs visual development and the use of eye exercises.
After years of research and the collection of large amounts of data from the screening of elite athletes, it became apparent to The Association of Sport and Schoolvision Practitioners that the traditional behaviour approach was unable to provide any conclusive evidence that it improved sporting performance.
It was clear that a new approach was necessary.
SVUKโs previous research into the incidence of hand/eye dominance in various sports gave rise to further research. Sporting tasks were recreated whilst the vision in one eye was deliberately worsened to see how it affected sporting performance. The results not only showed that this small reduction in acuity had a direct effect on sporting performance, it also highlighted the role of eye dominance and binocular vision in maximising sporting performance.
