For over 40 years in Leicester, the Brahma Kumaris have been working together with the community to teach meditiation and positive values. It all started when a family, who were the first to practise Raja Yoga Meditation in the city, decided they wanted to share with others their experiences of the study and practise of spiritual values and meditation.
The Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University (UK) teaches Raja Yoga as a way of experiencing peace of mind and a positive approach to life.
Raja Yoga meditation is a form of meditation that is accessible to people of all backgrounds. It is a meditation without rituals or mantras and can be practised anywhere at any time. Raja Yoga meditation is practised with ‘open eyes', which makes this method of meditation versatile, simple and easy to practice. Meditation is a state of being in that place just beyond every day consciousness, which is where spiritual empowerment begins. Spiritual awareness gives us the power to choose good and positive thoughts over those which are negative and wasteful. We start to respond to situations, rather than just reacting to them. We begin to live with harmony, we create better and happier, healthier relationships and change our lives in a most positive way.
The University provides opportunities for people from all religious and culture backgrounds to explore their own spiritualty and learn skills of reflection and meditation based on Raja Yoga philosophy, which will help develop inner calm, clear thinking and personal well-being. Across the UK we work with national and local organisations and community groups in such areas as inter –religious dialogue, youth programmes, prison outreach, social work and women’s and men’s groups.
