Nightmares vs. Night Terrors - what’s the difference?

If your little one wakes in the night screaming or crying, it can be so distressing but understanding what’s happening can really help.

🌙 Nightmares usually happen in the second half of the night. Your child may wake fully, remember the dream, and want comfort.
😵‍💫 Night terrors happen earlier in the night. Your little one might cry, scream, or thrash but they’re actually asleep and won’t remember it in the morning.

➡️ How to help:

Keep bedtime calm and predictable

Avoid any TV/movies/books that might scare them - especially before bed

Avoid overtiredness (it’s a big trigger!)

If it’s a night terror, don’t try to wake them - just keep them safe and wait for it to pass.

Every baby can sleep.

"Oh, you SHOULD be doing it this way…" 🙃

If you've had a baby, you've probably heard it all - from feeding to sleeping to how you hold your baby. Unsolicited advice seems to come free with every nappy change.

Here’s your reminder:
✨ You are not doing it wrong just because someone else did it differently.
✨ You are the expert on YOUR baby.
✨ It’s okay to smile, nod… and completely ignore it.

✨Client Transformation!

When I first met this lovely family, they were in a bit of a pickle. Their two toddler boys - aged 12 months and 26 months - would only fall asleep while being cuddled in their parents' bed. Sometimes, it would take several hours for the older boy to drift off.

Once they were finally asleep, mum and dad would transfer them to their cots… only for them to wake shortly after and end up back in their bed for any all-night slumber party!

Here’s what we did:

➡️ Made a few simple tweaks to the daytime routine so both boys could nap at the same time.

➡️ Introduced a calming bedtime routine to help them fully unwind.

➡️ Used my gentle settling method, allowing mum and dad to support the boys to fall asleep in their own cots.

➡️ Set clear boundaries - mum and dad were under strict instructions that no matter how tough it felt in the night, their bed was off-limits.

The results?
Two little boys with a predictable bedtime, happily settling in their own cots, and sleeping through the night.

The 30 minute nap struggle is real!
You finally sit down with a cuppa… and ping- they’re awake 😩

Short naps can leave both you and your baby feeling exhausted. But with a little tweak, you can start to teach your little one to link sleep cycles and nap for longer.

Try this tomorrow:
➡️5 mins before they usually wake, go in and wait.
➡️ Place a gentle hand on their chest.
➡️Use slow, deep shushes to help them through that tricky transition.

It’s a small step that can lead to longer, more restful naps for them—and more time for you. 😊
