Remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki: VIGIIL. EIGHTY YEARS AGO TODAY, an atomic bomb was dropped over the Japanese city of Hiroshima, causing the deaths of an estimated 120,000 people within just four days of the blast. Together with a bomb dropped on Nagasaki 3 days later, which killed at least 73,000 people, this represents the only use of atomic weapons in military conflict against a civilian population. The psychological and health effects of the bombings continue to impact survivors and their descendants, with some experiencing lifelong radiation-related health issues and psychological trauma. Remembrance events are today being held in Japan and the USA. An estimated 100,000 people survived the attacks, with some still alive today.
I plan to mark this sombre anniversary as part of my weekly vigil later today, remembering those who died, suffered lasting ill-health or trauma, and their loved ones.
