Growing People

Growing People Providing horticultural therapy in Herts to support people on their mental health recovery journey.

Growing People uses horticultural therapy to support people who are experiencing difficulties with their mental health in North Herts. Sessions take place in our beautiful orchard garden and are led by qualified horticultural therapists. Our aim is to use the healing nature of gardens to support you on your journey to recovery. You can self-refer to our service, or be referred by a support worker

or other service provider. We welcome anyone who wants to improve their mental health, so there's no need for previous gardening experience! We run four half-day horticultural therapy sessions on Mondays and Tuesdays, and if you are interested in joining us, please do get in touch. Call us on 07794 347283, e-mail enquiries@growing-people.org.uk, or drop in for a chat at The Letchworth Centre for Healthy Living, Hitchin Rd, Letchworth, SG6 3NA. In the summer heat, our wonderful volunteers dedicate their time to maintain our therapeutic gardens. 🌞💚🌱

Last week our team, dug over plots ready for our Gardeners to plant, made raised beds, watered thirsty plants and re-potted herbs.

Tending to the garden in the hot weather is no easy task, but we made sure to wear sunscreen and kept hydrated and took frequent breaks! 🌞😅

Volunteers don’t just help the garden grow, they help our Gardeners to thrive and continue with their therapy sessions.

A heart felt Thank You! Goes out to all our volunteers come rain or shine, you are truly amazing! 💚🤗

Our lovely Gardeners had a bumper crop of vegetables to harvest – potatoes, onions, spring onions, beetroot, salad leaves, and spinach all grown from their plots.💚🧅🥔🫜

Such a plentiful harvest
that we had to scramble to find enough bags for them all!

All their hard work of sowing the seeds, nurturing and watering and weeding paid off and we are so proud of their wonderful achievements. 💚👨‍🌾👏

Over the last week we have welcomed Peter Lickorish and groups of students from Shuttleworth College who are all studying for their Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) qualifications. 🌱👏

Horticulture, at its best, connects people, builds communities, creates beauty and improves the lives of all. 💚🌻

The green spaces horticulturists create positively impact on peoples’ lives. These spaces change behaviours, they improve both physical and mental health, they support environmental resilience and build stronger communities.

The importance of horticulture in wellness, therapy, social inclusion and community cohesion is one of the most exciting horticultural developments in recent years.

We hope that you all enjoyed seeing social and therapeutic horticulture in practice! 💚🌱😀

During we welcomed a wonderful group of volunteers from Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation who worked alongside our regular volunteers for the morning.

It was lovely to receive their following feedback:
“This morning, in honour of Volunteers’ Week, the team rolled up its sleeves and joined the nationwide celebration of kindness, community, and can-do spirit! Surrounded by the sights, scents, and serenity of nature at The Sadie Centre, proudly supporting Growing People – a fantastic local initiative offering therapeutic horticulture for individuals managing mental health challenges. From weeding, herb repotting, and path sweeping, the team dug deep (literally!) to help nurture both the garden and the wellbeing it supports. It was a muddy, meaningful, and memorable way to celebrate the magic of volunteering!”

We are so pleased that Letchworth Garden Heritage Foundation enjoyed their time with us and thank them for visiting.

We’re taking our cues from nature to tell us what to do.🌞

Our Gardeners have been:
🌽•Planting tender crops like sweetcorn and squashes now that it’s warm enough at night.
🍅•Setting up tomato supports in the poly tunnel to make the most of the summer sun, so we can get the best, tastiest harvest in the late summer.
🫛•Harvesting early crops like broad beans and turnips now that they’re big enough.
🌱•Sowing seeds for late season crops while there’s some moisture around from the recent rain and some clouds to stop them drying out too fast.
🐛•And of course weeding, watering and picking of the pests!

So, there are lots of gardening activities that our Gardeners are enjoying and hopefully will reap the rewards when its harvest time. 🪏👩‍🌾🫜

World Therapeutic Horticulture Day 18th May 2025 🌱

May 18th is World Therapeutic Horticulture Day and we’re reminded just how important it is to care for our minds with love, kindness patience. 💚

At Growing People, Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH) as part of The Herts Mind Network , understand that spending time in nature is invaluable and can bring a calmness and a connection in a peaceful safe environment.

We’d like to thank one of our gardeners-turned-volunteer for sharing in her own words, how gardening has helped her through her journey:
“Just being outside gardening and being around kind people helps me, I feel I can just be myself and not think or worry about anything or feel judged. I can just be here in the moment, and it
gives me a feeling that I can do this.”

Sometimes, just planting one seed is enough, lets continue having an open discussion about mental health and make our outdoor spaces our sanctuary for our minds. 💚🪴
