Fog wrapped around the hills between the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District.

I took these on our first ever trip to the Lakes two years ago. It was also the first time we set out to explore England beyond London.

We fell in love within the first minutes and have been coming back to explore new or known and loved places every year since.

January in 20 photos.

Not shown:
- My slow migration to Substack
- Me raving about Mark Lawrence’s The Library Trilogy to anyone who would listen (i.e. two people)
- Falling behind on my uni planning because having a house renovated and prepping for exams do not play well together
- The large shadow that grief casts on every January in our house
- The 300 hours spent trying to decide on paint colours
- Lots of laughter, kitchen dancing, and games of tag with the puppy

I’m not reading as much as previous years, consequence of study books eating up a lot of my time. It is making me a little more selective and appreciative of what I do get to read, which is not a bad thing.

If I hadn’t read these yet, they’d definitely be on my reading list for this fall. What are you (looking forward to) reading as the weather turns and we move into the slower days of the year?

I’ve read fewer books this year than previous years, but I’m still finding books I love every month if not multiple times a month. I figured I’d start sharing a bit of my (somewhat escalated) hobby 📚

Grief is never going to be fun, but I do look back with such warm memories to the grief rituals I have been part of. It really has transformed my relationship to grief and has just made it a little lighter. And that’s all I want for anyone living with grief: for it to feel a little lighter, a little more bearable. To feel like there is space for it.

I’d love to see you in France.

This is also not the time to remind -or try to convince- me that we’re all living an illusion of our own making and time is not lineair and if I just take plant medicine XYZ or use this awesome practice you found I can easily see and connect with them again.

I jest, but also not really.

Drop any additional tips you have below 👇🏼 Because supporting people through grief or really any of life’s big challenges can feel like navigating a minefield. And I’m not here to hate on attempts at support, but rather to help those attempts be more successful.

“I’m writing this sat in the garden of my childhood home - my home, now, I suppose -, shifting back and forth between the blistering but welcome sun and the pleasant reprieve of shade. Surrounded by notebooks, paperwork, letters I should have opened months ago but didn’t -couldn’t-, and a million memories of my childhood and the people that were present for every moment of it, but are now present only - and constantly - by the resonance of their absence.”

I’m still playing with longer texts over on Substack if you’re keen to find me there 🙏🏼

When is the last time you were able to freely grieve?

Do you know what it feels like to give voice to that wail that’s been trapped in your chest rather than swallow it down?
To let yourself sink down the many murky layers of your grief until your feet touch the ground of your sorrow and just rest there for a little while?
To let the tears that have been frozen for so long flow and be witnessed without all frantic efforts being made to dam up the river and return you to being fine.
to get it all under control and fine.

For the first nearly 10 years of my grief, my answer would have been no and never.

Because it took me that long to find people and spaces that would just let me be not fine for a while.
That could see the depths of grief and not look away or offer well-intentioned platitudes.

There’s something so very different about grieving in community.
I’d put words to it if I could, but it truly is one of those things you just have to experience.

Join us (that is me and and ), on the beautiful coast of the Arcachon Bay in France this autumn for a 4-day immersion in grief and experience it for yourself.

Even if you are wondering whether your grief warrants that level of attention. Especially if you are doubting that - because I promise you it does.

Honour your grief and book your spot, because honestly the location alone is worth it (ocean side, between the pines, sauna, ecological pool and the most stunning views).
We’d love to have you.
