What is Melatonin?

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in your brain.

The brain produces the hormone in response to darkness. It helps with the timing of your circadian rhythms (24-hour internal clock) and with sleep.

Being exposed to light at night can block melatonin production. Research suggests that melatonin plays other important roles in the body beyond sleep. Therefore, in addition to improving sleep, melatonin is also involved in managing immune function, blood pressure, and cortisol levels.

Plus, it acts as an antioxidant, with some research finding that it can significantly affect many health conditions.

A large analysis of 19 studies in children and adults with sleep disorders found that melatonin reduced the amount of time it took to fall asleep, increased total sleep time, and improved sleep quality

But insomnia is so much more than that. It is debilitating and can make people feel sleepy in the daytime, low on energy, irritability and a depressed mood.

An average adult needs 7-9 hours, children 9-13 and babies need 12-17 hours sleep.

There are many causes to insomnia that should be investigated first like

😩 stress, anxiety or depression
🫨 noise
🥵🥶 a room that's too hot or cold
🍸 alcohol, caffeine or ni****ne
🥴 recreational drugs like ecstacy or cochineal
✈️ jet lag
👮‍♀️shift work
