Down-turned corners of the mouth, also sometimes referred to as "marionette lines" or "oral commissures," describe the appearance where the corners of the mouth angle downwards, even when the person is not expressing sadness or frowning. This can give the face a perpetually somber, tired, or even slightly angry expression.
There are several potential causes for down-turned corners of the mouth:
1. Natural Aging:
* Loss of Collagen and Elastin: As we age, the skin loses collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for its firmness and elasticity. This loss can cause the skin around the mouth to sag and droop, pulling the corners downwards.
* Fat Pad Descent: The fat pads in the cheeks can descend with age, contributing to the loss of support around the mouth.
* Bone Resorption: Subtle changes in the underlying bone structure of the jaw and cheeks can also contribute to the appearance of down-turned corners.
2. Muscle Activity:
* Depressor Anguli Oris Muscle: This muscle, located on either side of the lower lip, is responsible for pulling the corners of the mouth downwards when we frown or express sadness. Over time, repeated use of this muscle can lead to the formation of lines and a more permanent downward turn.
3. Genetics:
* Some people are genetically predisposed to having a more downward sloping mouth shape. This can be noticeable even at a younger age.
4. Dental Issues:
* In some cases, significant changes in dental structure or bite can affect the support of the surrounding soft tissues and contribute to down-turned corners.
5. Environmental Factors:
* Sun damage can accelerate the breakdown of collagen and elastin, potentially worsening the appearance of down-turned corners.
* Smoking can also contribute to skin aging and loss of elasticity.
