Young girls are more unhappy now in comparison to 2011, and are more unhappy compared to boys 😟

A leading cause of this is that women (from 7 years old until 70) are less active then men

If girls:
• have no role models to lead the way
• only see photoshopped abs and bums on social media
• only associate exercise with weight lose because their mums and sisters are always dieting
• learn to think it’s “manly” to sweat and be competitive
• are constantly told to place academics above training and exercise
• taught that exercise is only equal to sport.. then is no wonder so many girls drop out.

We need to change our mindset and health behaviours, if not for ourselves then for the next generation of little girls who are looking up to us all 🚺.

Just a little reminder. Whatever you're feeling, know that there are other girls around you feeling the same way.

Tips to deal with gym intimidation

⭐️Is your fear of the gym stopping you reaching your goals? ⭐️

It’s not easy. It’s a jungle if new heavy machinery, loud music, lots of new people, often beautiful people walking around half naked making you feel even more uncomfortable.

Ive been there.
✅ I’ve been in a squat rack and let the bar fall in top of me. As in, I was on my knees with a barbell in top of me. It was so loud. I was mortified. Jaysus.
✅ I’ve been so weak on bench press that I’ve let the bar fall in me and some guy had to come take it off me... I’m pretty sure it was an empty bar.
✅ I’ve been running on the treadmill and my phone has flew out of my bra, onto the treadmill and flew backwards to the guy behind me on an exercise bike.
✅ I’ve gone to the gym with a hole in the bum of my leggings the size of a football and done an entire leg day before noticing. Seriously. I’m still dying.

This doesn’t just apply to the gym. It could be a team you want to join, a club, new class... whatever it is. You got this. Try some of these tips and they might help ease you in 💜

⭐️ Exercise and Mental Health ⭐️
I think we all know that when we exercise our mood tends to improve, but did you know that this has been proven time and time again in scientific literature?
Not only does exercise improve our general mood but it can actually be prescribed as a treatment for clinical depression and anxiety (offen in conjunction with medication).
Both resistance training and aerobic training have been found to be beneficial, as well as both low, moderate and even high intensity.
If you are suffering from mental health issues, I know that it can be a time of low motivation and self esteem. Mental health problems can cause tiredness and the last thing you want to do is go and exercise. However, if you can take it slow, go for a walk, a swim, cycle, lift some weights, dance, or find any movement that is bearable, please try it. It can make improvements in all areas of your life 💜

6 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Joined a Gym!

1. The hands down the trousers thing KILLS ME! But even without that, you're still touching machines that people have been touching, sweating, and coughing all over. So make sure to wash your hands after your workout.

2. Gyms can be confusing to navigate (especially if you wear glasses and exercise without your glasses on!). Take your time walking around to familiarise yourself with the layout. Or better still, ask at reception if you can get a tour.

3. Sometimes when I have headphones on I feel a bit more anxious. I've found if I take them off (or even wear them without any music playing) I can feel a bit more present and aware of my surroundings.

4. Certain machines are tricky to set up. Have a look at the pictures on the machine, watch other people using it, or YouTube it! This will help with your confidence.

5. Listen, I'm a sweaty gal. Whether it's sweat marks on my clothes, or sweat marks on benches. Wipe down your equipment when you're finished and bring a towel with you if you remember.

6. On a 20kg barbell, if there is more than a 20kg plate on one side and nothing on the other side you might find it starting to tip. To avoid injury (to your physical self & your ego), try to unload plates evenly.

Now the evenings are darker, lots of us are feeling a little more uncomfortable waking or running outside by ourselves.

We wanted to start by saying
1️⃣ This is s**t. We shouldn’t have to take precautions to be outside in the evening alone.
2️⃣ It shouldn’t be our responsibility to take precautions.
3️⃣ We hope one day everyone can exercise at any time of day without being afraid.

Here are some practical tips we collected from friends on things you can do to reduce risks when exercising going on an evening walk or run 💜

The answer is

TRUE!

Unfortunately lots of us avoid exercising when we have our periods - which is understandable if you’re feeling tired, cranky, have bad cramps, and a sweaty pad or uncomfortable tampon.

HOWEVER! Did you know that exercising whilst having your period can help to ease cramps and bloating, improve mood, and even reduce feeling tired.

It’s important to find movement that you enjoy and doesn’t make you feel worse. Try a walk, light cardio exercise, strength training or some yoga.

Also, period pants or menstrual cups can be more comfortable when exercising during your period!

💐 CONGRATULATIONS!!! 💓

The biggest congratulations to some of HERizon’s incredible activity mentors on graduating this week. Words can’t describe how instrumental these gals were (those in the photo and missing!) in this initiative and I for one am so excited to see what they do on their next adventures 😍

Congratulations x1000 👩🏻‍🎓📚🎉

What you see on social media often isn’t real, therefore it’s impossible to attain some of the bodies we see online.

In one swipe we can have
- different eye shape and colour
- different colour skin + freckles
- smoother, pore free skin
- fuller lips
- whiter teeth

How does seeing filtered photos all day make you feel about yourself and your body in real life?

Two thoughts today

1. Most of what we see on social media isn’t real. It’s the highlights of a persons life, and usually those highlights are filtered. No matter how happy/successful I am, there will always be someone happier and more successful on social media. Stop comparing ourself to imaginary photos online.

2. I usually let one mean comment outweigh all the positive ones. I still remember being called Acne Emma by a boy when I was 13. 15 years later I am still insecure about my skin. We should not let nasty comments hold so much weight in how we view ourselves.
