7 years ago I attended a workshop on Group Consultations (a model for delivering high-quality care outside of the traditional 1:1 medical appointments) and knew immediately it would be a model that would help my patients.
It took me five years of persistence but last year we started running these sessions in my NHS surgery and the patient feedback was overwhelmingly positive with ๐ฏ of patient saying they would recommend the sessions to a friend and that they had found them beneficial.
I know from listening to patients in both my NHS and aesthetics clinic how difficult accessing high-quality menopause care can be for some women and this is something that I am determined to change. Today was a very proud moment for me as I was invited to Liverpool womenโs hospital to share my experiences of delivering group consultations and look at how this could translate into the hospital.
Trying to implement change can feel like an uphill battle at times, and progress can be painfully slow, but change only takes one. The power of the group consultation for me is in the connection and community amongst the women who attend, my role as the clinician is simply to give the information that they need to take control of their own health.
So many women struggle unnecessarily with symptoms of menopause and accessing the right care. I hope that this is something we can start to change by opening up the conversation; in our clinics, homes, gyms, hair dressers. Not only do you not need to suffer in silence, you do not need to suffer at all.
