Why is FOCUS2 an important research study? Swipe to find out!

What is fear of childbirth? Does everyone have fears around childbirth?
How women and birthing people feel about birth is very varied. Some will have mild to moderate fears and others will have extreme fears. This is sometimes called tokophobia.
Around 14% of women experience tokophobia. This is when someone feels very frightened about labour and/or birth. This can present in lots of different ways including feelings of fear and dread, physical symptoms such as increased heart rate or sweating when you think about birth, and sometimes avoidance such as avoiding thinking about the birth or sometimes avoiding getting pregnant.
Our previous work asked women and midwives about what they feared during birth. This helped us to create the Fear of Childbirth Questionnaire which we are now testing.

Our research study is looking to test a new measure of fear of childbirth called the Fear of Childbirth Questionnaire (FCQ) to see if it could help identify fear of childbirth early in pregnancy.

Are you up to 16 weeks pregnant? Do you currently live in the UK? You could help us by taking part.

Taking part involves completing an online survey. You will then be asked to either repeat the survey or take part in a brief telephone interview within 2 weeks of your initial survey completion. After the telephone interview you will receive a £10 voucher for your time.
