NEWS: Liverpool Women’s University Hospital is bringing soft facilities management services in-house this October, meaning 130 staff who provide cleaning, catering, portering and security services will move onto NHS contracts.

This decision was approved by the UHL Group board following a review of the outsourced services, which identified that bringing services in-house delivers best value for money.
In recent years, these services have been successfully brought in-house across other UHL Group sites, giving better flexibility over how the services are run and improved quality. In addition, this will improve the terms and conditions for staff in the roles by offering improved pay, annual leave provision, and pension.

Jenny Hannon, Executive Managing Director at Liverpool Women’s University Hospital, said: “We’re delighted to be bringing our soft facilities management services in-house. This transition means our valued colleagues will move onto NHS contracts, marking an important step in aligning their roles more closely with the wider NHS workforce. We look forward to welcoming you into the NHS family.”

Congratulations to our Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (EPMA) Upgrade Project team at Aintree who have been awarded Team of the Month. 😊

The EPMA Upgrade Project team was nominated for demonstrating a shared vision for effectively implementing a system that will improve the safety of our patients.

The nomination explained:
“The EPMA and pharmacy stock control system upgrade has been over a year in planning and five months of intensive testing and go live preparation. The system manages administration of around 25,000 medication doses per day across our sites and is a core digital system used to maintain patient safety across our hospitals.
“The system needed upgrading to deliver some key safety updates, and the Pharmacy Digital Medicines team, supported by digital services delivered the project on time and with minimal impact to our patients.

“The team ensured the upgrade was meticulously planned and demonstrates a great example of cross team collaboration with technical and clinical colleagues working together to benefit our patients. Overnight, the team remained on site across wards and emergency departments to ensure overnight teams felt supported.
“We now have an updated EPMA system with enhanced security and new features allowing us to drive forward key improvements.

The upgrade was planned to take up to six hours offline, which can have a significant impact on our medicines use, however the overnight work was completed two and a half hours early thanks to the shared efforts of our teams.” 💙

Maternity services at Liverpool Women's University Hospital have been rated Good by our regulators Care Quality Commission following an unannounced inspection in April, improving on its previous rating of Requires Improvement 👏

I’m particularly pleased that inspectors highlighted the good teamwork they observed and that care was centred around the needs of our patients.” 😊

Buckle up – we’ve got some news for you! 🚗

ITV Granada Reports visited the Breast Unit at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital this week to speak with members of the Sunshine Group, a support network for our breast cancer patients, who have been testing a new seatbelt accessory designed by Ford UK.

The SupportBelt is a soft, foam accessory that attaches to a car seatbelt and is designed to improve comfort when travelling after a mastectomy or removal of breast tissue.

It adapts to various body types, reducing the risk of chafing or irritation and supports breast cancer patients to get back behind the wheel following their treatment 😊

Families taking part in the Children Growing Up in Liverpool (C-GULL) study recently came together for a summer picnic at The Bluecoat in Liverpool City Centre — a special event to bring families and researchers closer together 🤱

C-GULL is a landmark study that will follow 10,000 babies born in Liverpool — from pregnancy through childhood and beyond. The aim is to gain deep insight into the factors shaping early development and long-term health outcomes.

Led by the University of Liverpool, in partnership with Liverpool Women’s Hospital, the Wellcome Trust, Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and Liverpool City Council, C-GULL is the first study of its kind in the region.

The study is open to anyone pregnant (aged 16+) and receiving care at Liverpool Women's University Hospital 😊

We are immensely proud to announce that Aintree University Hospital’s medical care services have been rated Good by the Care Quality Commission following an inspection in October 2024, improving on the previous rating of Requires Improvement. 👏

This marks the final of six reports rating LUHFT services as Good, which is an outstanding achievement. This includes LUHFT achieving a Good rating for being Well Led - the CQC now gives a single trust level rating, which is the rating for the well-led key question for a trust. Services and locations are still rated for all five key questions and given an ‘overall’ aggregated rating.

For the purposes of CQC regulation, Liverpool University Hospitals NHS FT and Liverpool Women’s NHS FT are still considered as separate statutory entities, and the well-led inspection was of LUHFT hospital sites, however the CQC report acknowledges that the UHL Group Board now covers both trusts.

Following their inspection at Aintree, the CQC rated the service Good for being Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well Led, and Requires Improvement for being Safe.

Assessors highlighted that the service has a positive learning culture, with regular training, patient safety events and transparency in sharing lessons learnt with staff reporting they feel confident to raise any concerns or highlight any issues.

The service was described as friendly and helpful, with patients, their families and carers praising staff on their prompt responsiveness and determination to provide reassurance when explaining care and treatment plans. Colleagues were said to prioritise personalised care and adapt to meet the needs of the individual, always maintaining cleanliness, reducing risk and ensuring patients feel safe.

Peter Turkington, Executive Managing Director of Aintree University Hospital, said: “This Good rating is a true reflection of the dedication and determination of our talented colleagues at Aintree who work hard to provide the very best quality of care to our patients. I am pleased that the CQC has recognised the improvements that we have made, in particular the collaborative work we are doing with our partners to ensure patients receive care in the most appropriate setting.

“The CQC did indicate areas for improvement, and we are working to address these, but this improved rating is a fantastic achievement that our teams should be very proud of.”
