Vibrant staff-inspired murals unveiled in Royal Liverpool's Emergency Department 🤩

A new series of colourful 'action' pictures have been unveiled in the main corridor of the Royal Liverpool University Hospital's Accident and Emergency department, marking a significant transformation of the patient and staff environment.

The vibrant murals celebrate the diverse activities that hospital staff enjoy in their time away from work – from Irish dancing and tai chi to the Merseyside Derby – reflecting the rich and varied lives of the people who provide care every day.

Dr Sahra Young, Emergency Medicine Consultant and Lead for Health and Wellbeing said: “The hospital corridors are now alive with colour and are a huge dopamine hit for staff and patients alike. The paintings symbolise Liverpool's diverse culture, love for sports as well as the importance of community.”

The Urology team at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital can now offer a new magnetic stent technique to make treatment for urinary and bladder obstructions quicker, kinder and less invasive 🙌

This innovative stent has a small magnetic tip, which means it can be removed without the need for a cystoscopy, a procedure that can be uncomfortable and often requires anaesthesia. By avoiding this step, patients experience less discomfort, shorter procedure times and a smoother recovery.

The technique aims to help our teams provide safer, more comfortable care while also freeing up valuable theatre capacity so more patients can be treated sooner.

This is just one example of how we’re embracing innovation across our hospitals to improve patient experience and deliver the best possible care 😊

We’ve launched a new mobile breast screening unit to help make screening easier to access for women in some of the hardest to reach areas of Liverpool. 🩷

By bringing breast screening directly into local communities, we hope more women will be able to attend their appointments — without the need to travel across the city.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK and early detection dramatically improves survival rates close to 100%, highlighting the importance of regular screening, however Central and North Liverpool have some of the lowest screening uptake rates in the country.

Dr Anu Shrotri, Director of Breast Screening, said: “For many women, giving up half a day to attend a breast screening appointment simply isn’t an option. By offering services closer to home, we hope to increase early detection and ultimately save lives.”

Aintree University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital have struck gold 🏅

The three hospitals have been awarded the Work Experience Quality Standard (WEX) Gold Award by NHS England, in recognition of the outstanding opportunities they provide for young people aspiring to a career in the NHS.

The WEX Gold Award is the highest accolade available to NHS organisations and demonstrates that the placements offered are of the very highest standard.

NHS England officials praised the hospitals for offering clear career pathways, progression opportunities and strong support networks for young people undertaking placements 👦👧

Each year, the hospitals welcome more than 500 young people from across Cheshire and Merseyside, giving them access to a wide range of clinical and non-clinical placements.

Alongside work experience placements, colleagues regularly visit local schools and colleges to conduct mock interviews and host NHS taster days, giving students hands-on experience of the wide range of careers available within the health service.

Annette Beaumont, Apprenticeship and Widening Participation Lead for NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, said: “This award is a testament to the commitment and passion of our teams and departments, who dedicate their time and expertise to supporting young people looking for a career within the NHS.

“By offering the best possible experiences and opportunities to local young people, we are not only developing our future workforce but also ensuring we continue to deliver outstanding care to our patients for years to come.” 🙌

Congratulations to our Central Administration Team at the Royal Liverpool Hospital who have been awarded Team of the Month 🤩

The team was nominated for their unwavering professionalism, compassion and resilience in making a difference to the lives of thousands of patients who enter our hospital each day.

The nomination read:

“I want to take a moment to recognise the incredible work of our Admin Team, our true unsung heroes based in our clinics and reception areas. They are the face of our hospital, the “other front door” and the first point of contact for many patients and visitors.

“Every day, they guide people to their appointments, offer reassurance during moments of vulnerability, and remain calm and professional even when faced with frustration or distress.

“Recently, one team member in particular, Joanne exemplified this compassion and resilience when a member of the public saw her as the last person who would listen in a moment of distress. Joanne calmly supported the patient, guiding them to safety and her gentle approach made a real difference which is a true reflection of the values the whole team brings to work every day.”

Judges praised:

“A worthy nomination for our essential administration team who do so much to support patients and their families. Their knowledge and skills provide a vital steer as an essential part of the patient journey.”

“Joanne's calm response and sensitive approach in response to the patient at their darkest moment is truly humbling and inspirational. Thank you for all that you do!” 💙

A newly established Ketamine Clinic at Aintree University Hospital featured on ITV News last night 🎥

ITV News trailed a new documentary called ‘Ketamine: What’s Next?’, available on YouTube and ITVX now, exploring the rising trend in ketamine use and highlighting the great work our Urology Team are doing for patients who are experiencing lasting side effects from taking the drug over a period of time.

The new Ketamine Clinic has been established to help patients across Cheshire and Merseyside who have been referred by their GP with urological side effects that have been caused by Ketamine use. Chronic usage affects the lining of the bladder, and can shrink it, leading to frequency in needing to urinate, infections, bleeding, blockages and incontinence.

We’re pleased to share that Amy Cardinal, an Acute Oncology Nurse at Aintree, has received a national award for Excellence in Acute Oncology at the UK Oncology Nursing Society (UKONS) Celebrating the Inspirational Cancer Nurse Conference.

Amy was awarded the accolade in recognition of her outstanding dedication to improving patient outcomes, which has been driven by her own personal journey after losing her father to Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2021.

Her creation of the Jeff Gordon Framework, named in honour of her father, aims to ensure Acute Oncology data is visible and embedded within care delivery, enabling effective and meaningful use of patient data to shape services around their needs.
This can support faster treatment by spotting early warning signs, avoidance of unnecessary tests or procedures, and shorter stays in hospital.

Amy said: ‘I’m proud to be leading this work in honour of my father. By turning my pain into purpose, I can help to improve cancer care for patients in our hospitals, ensuring that patients can receive treatment that is better informed by their data.’
