We’re delighted to have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding with 22 Multi‑Role Medical Regiment - a major step forward in strengthening how we work with our Defence colleagues.

22 Multi-Role Medical Regiment (MMR) is one of two British Army’s MMR and is located at Dale Barracks, Chester, with their sister MMR (21 MMR) being based in York.

This partnership creates a clear pathway for military clinicians to take up placements across our hospitals, helping them maintain and develop essential skills for both NHS and military practice. It also brings valuable clinical capacity and specialist expertise into our services.

The agreement builds on UHL Group’s strong commitment to the Armed Forces community, following our recent gold‑standard reaccreditation under the Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. Placements are already available at Aintree, Broadgreen and the Royal Liverpool, with plans to expand as the programme grows.

Signed by Lt Col Adam Taylor and Heather Barnett, our Group Chief People Officer, this collaboration marks an exciting and meaningful step in supporting military personnel and enhancing care for the communities we serve.

More than 1,000 families at Liverpool Women's University Hospital have now joined the groundbreaking Generation Study, helping to identify rare genetic conditions in newborns long before symptoms appear 👶❤

The study, led by Genomics England and supported by NHS England, screens babies for over 200 rare conditions, giving families earlier answers, faster treatment and the best possible start in life.

Sally, from Liverpool, took part after welcoming her daughter Nellie in November 2024. She says the support from the maternity and research teams gave her “reassurance” and helped her feel confident in every step of the process.

This research could transform future care for babies across the UK, creating one of the world’s most valuable newborn genomic databases 📊

Congratulations to Michael Collins and Jo Dyson, our latest Employees of the Month.👏

Michael and Jo, Early Diagnosis Lung Cancer Navigators, were both nominated for their outstanding patient centred care, working together to support a vulnerable patient to attend an important appointment.

The nomination explained:
“One patient was reluctant to attend his outpatient appointment and had failed to attend on more than one occasion. Through telephone conversations it was established the patient did not want to leave his dog alone, and at the time, didn’t have anyone he trusted to look after him.

“Michael and Jo developed a rapport via telephone with the patient, which led to an offer of Michael meeting the gentleman with his dog outside the hospital main entrance prior to a further appointment time. Michael then looked after his dog allowing the patient to successfully attend the appointment.

“Michael and Jo always show great levels of care and compassion, and this is just one example. They are instrumental to the running of the lung cancer service and take a great weight from the Lung CNS team.

Judges praised Micael and Jo, leaving comments such as:
“Wow - this really is person-centred and pet-centred care! What amazing, individualised patient care, building a trusting relationship with the patient to understand their reasons not to attend an important appointment - unsung heroes amidst patient care, well done!”

“Well done Michael and Jo, this clearly made a big difference for the patient.” ❤

Congratulations to our Dermatology team at Aintree University Hospital who have been awarded Team of the Month. 🙌

The team was nominated by the patient’s family member in recognition for their exceptional care, empathy and compassion in supporting the patient to attend their appointments during an extremely difficult part of their life.

The nomination read:
“Following a family bereavement, my daughter was struggling with grief and leaving the house, meaning she cancelled a series of her appointments. After sharing my concerns with one of the department secretaries, I was reassured not to worry and Dr Bharati offered telephone appointments before suggesting she try and attend an in-person appointment.

“At such an unimaginably difficult time going through a tragic loss, staff within Dermatology have treated my daughter with extraordinary kindness, patience and understanding.

“The entire team has gone beyond their roles to make her feel supported and their gentle approach has made an overwhelming situation so much easier for us both. Not only have they provided excellent clinical care, but also the most heartfelt support, which must have been difficult for them too seeing my daughter so upset.

“I am profoundly grateful for the way they cared for my daughter when she needed it most. Their compassion made a genuine difference, and I believe they are truly deserving of recognition for their outstanding support.”

Judges praised:
“Exemplar of going beyond for a patient, given their difficult situation. It is commendable that our staff have been able to adapt to what this patient needs to ensure she receives her care. Exceptional patient support, truly well done!” 💙

Kay Malekfar, from St Helens, has become the first patient to join a pioneering research trial in Liverpool for a life threatening heart condition ❤️

Kay, 66, is taking part in a new study at the NIHR Liverpool Clinical Research Facility, based at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, to find out whether lowering lipoprotein(a) can slow the progression of calcific aortic valve stenosis, a condition that can lead to heart failure if left untreated.

This collaborative trial could transform future care and reduce the need for major heart surgery.

Kay, who is under the care of Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, said taking part in research gives “an extra level of care” and encourages others to get involved too.
