Colleagues from our Endoscopy service at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital welcomed peers from across the country to collaborate and learn about advanced endoscopy procedures 😊

The SMART Symposium, which was attended by more than 70 delegates from across the country, was named in honour Dr Howard Smart, who recently retired after spending more than three decades caring for thousands of patients at the Royal.

The Endoscopy Unit at the Royal is one of the busiest in the country, carrying out more than 20,000 procedures each year.

Of those 20,000 procedures many are complex cases that few units in the country can provide surgery for.

As part of the symposium, several live procedures were streamed to attendees with senior clinicians at the Royal explaining and demonstrating how to best administer care 🎬

Claire Beyga, Project Coordinator for Endoscopy, said: “It was a privilege to host this event, and its success was testament to the skill and dedication of our Endoscopy colleagues.

“Having the opportunity to share learning and draw upon experiences from other teams and clinicians will only improve the care we are all able to provide to our patients here in Liverpool and across the country.

“We hope to make this an annual event and grow its influence year upon year.” 🙌

Congratulations to Angela Grue, our latest Employee of the Month. 😊

Angela, Healthcare Assistant in our Outpatients Department at the Aintree University Hospital was nominated for always going above and beyond to support patients and her colleagues with the upmost compassion.

The nomination explained how recently, Angela has demonstrated exemplary care and compassion to an old colleague throughout her six-month palliative stay in hospital:

“Angela would selflessly visit during her lunch hour to feed and encourage her to eat, as well as after work, she would sit with her to talk and keep her mind alive. Angela is constantly thinking of others; she is so kind to all her patients and is constantly going above what is required. She really is a kind and lovely person, and her colleagues love her.

“Nothing is ever too much trouble, she is extremely generous with her time, volunteers to take patients all over the hospital, can lift the mood of a whole team with her smile and is our dementia champion, always looking for innovative ways to provide help to patients and their carers.

The judges commented: “How lovely to be visiting and encouraging her colleague to eat and drink, staying with her until the very end. Great work Angela, you should be very proud - excellent nomination.”

“This is such a beautiful and heart-warming nomination- Angela clearly has such a sense of compassion and care and always goes above and beyond to support patients and her colleagues - well done Angela!” 💙

Our Occupational Health team which supports colleagues across UHL Group sites as well as other local trusts and NHS organisations, has won an NHS Health at Work Network Recognition Award for its role in implementing a new staff wellbeing initiative 🏆

As part of the NHS North West Regional Partnership, our Occupational Health colleagues have created a new guide for managers, which ensures colleagues receive the correct support at the right time by asking managers to complete preliminary assessments.

This enables the Occupational Health service to provide tailored and meaningful advice and outcomes.

Diane Haddock, Associate Director Workforce and Wellbeing, said: “I am extremely proud that our Occupational Health service, as part of a North West focus group aimed at growing occupational health and wellbeing, has received national recognition for their work in caring for the health and wellbeing of their colleagues".

“As an NHS organisation it is our duty and privilege to care for our communities, and our valuable workforce is part of that. If our colleagues are well supported both physically and mentally, then they are able to work to the best of their ability and provide the best care possible to our patients” 😊

Patients at Aintree University Hospital are enjoying an extended and more varied menu at mealtimes following the completion of a £10m purpose-built kitchen facility and launch of a new heated meal trolley service, mirroring the successful approach taken at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and Broadgreen Hospital.

We have partnered with Apetito, which professionally prepares the meals which are then frozen immediately to lock in nutritional value and flavour, delivered to us and then stored in our purpose-built kitchen. Meals are then reheated using Burlodge equipment on the ward just before service, so patients receive hot, quality food at their bedside. The upgraded service offers patients much greater menu choice including traditional and international dishes, special diets, and clear allergen information.

Our catering staff worked together with our dietitians to deliver this improvement and feedback from patients and staff has been extremely positive following a soft launch earlier this month.

This we’re highlighting how tuberculosis is on the rise! It’s a bacterial infection which mainly affects the lungs – but it can affect any part of your body.

Smoking is very harmful if you have TB, it can cause lasting damage to your lungs.

Our Respiratory team, Community TB team, Tropical and Infectious Diseases Unit and CURE team have been working in collaboration with Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance , Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine - LSTM and City Health Care Partnership.

Their aim is to improve lung health by improving access to smoking cessation services amongst people taking TB treatment.

If you stop smoking while being treated for TB, you have a higher chance of getting better and a lower chance of getting it again.

Colleagues from our Nephrology service have won a Health Service Journal Patient Safety Award for their role in an initiative improving kidney disease care across the North West.

The chronic kidney disease pathway improvement project, known as CORE Kidney, won the award for ‘Best Use of Integrated Care and Partnership Working in Patient Safety’.

This collaborative partnership – between NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, North West Kidney Network, NHS Cheshire and Merseyside, Cheshire and Mersey Biochemistry Network, and supported by the Telehealth team at Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust – was recognised for going above and beyond to improve the standards of care provided to patients across the region.

The project has established a comprehensive, system-wide framework aimed at improving the early detection, risk assessment, and proactive management of chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Following its success, the initiative is now ready for wider regional rollout ensuring a future-ready system that delivers better outcomes for CKD patients across Cheshire and Merseyside.

Dr Wodeyar, Consultant Nephrologist at NHS UHL Group and North West Kidney Network CKD Clinical lead for Cheshire and Merseyside, said: “We are incredibly honoured to receive this award – it is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our whole team.

“Patient safety is at the heart of everything we do, and this recognition highlights our commitment to delivering the highest quality of care for a group of patients we deeply care about.

“Through this award, we also want to raise the profile of our co-produced solution – so that more primary care colleagues come forward to partner with us in tackling this urgent public health challenge.

“Together, we can ensure earlier detection, better prevention, and safer, more consistent care for people living with chronic kidney disease.”"

Our third and final team to have been shortlisted for not one, but two Nursing Times Workforce Awards, is our Corporate Practice Development Nurses 🤩

The Corporate Practice Development Nurses team is up for both the Preceptorship of the Year and Best Staff Wellbeing Initiative awards.

The Multi-professional Preceptorship Programme has been redesigned, with more than 1,300 colleagues benefiting to date. It promotes shared learning, wellbeing and clinical readiness through face-to-face workshops, a dedicated app and pastoral care that has improved staff engagement and retention.

The team’s wellbeing initiative, Together, WE RISE (Wellbeing, Resilience, Inclusion, Support, Empowerment), has also been successful in providing newly qualified staff with a dedicated space to prioritise their wellbeing. In collaboration with Mary’s Place and supported by the Amin Abdullah RCN Foundation, the initiative has expanded, helping provide support to preceptors, those who support newly qualified staff find their feet. Colleagues have described it as “transformative” and “restorative.” 💙

Winners will be announced on 26 November.

The second of our three teams to have been shortlisted for a Nursing Times Workforce Award is the Clinical Research Facility (CRF) 🥳

The CRF at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital has been shortlisted for the Best Employer for Staff Recognition and Engagement Award.

The team’s development pathway, aimed at entry level research nurses, has empowered and upskilled those who have taken part. It has helped develop a culture of continuous improvement, with better patient safety standards and staff morale. Half of programme participants have progressed into more senior roles and staff retention is at an all-time high.

We have our fingers crossed the CRF is named a winner at the awards ceremony on 26 November 🤞

Planning permission has been granted for a £5 million Maggie's Centres cancer support centre to go on the site of the old Royal Liverpool University Hospital 🙌

The Maggie's centre is the first project to be approved for development on the site of the old Royal, with future development opportunities on the healthcare campus currently being explored.

The Steve Morgan Foundation has worked with HB Architects Ltd to design the centre, which will provide free practical, psychological and emotional support for people with cancer, as well as their family and friends, from across the whole of Merseyside.

This will be the second Maggie’s centre in Merseyside and is expected to open in 2027 👷

The centre will support people like 39-year-old Chris, who is living with incurable cancer and visits Maggie’s Wirral with his wife Rachael.

Chris said: “I lost so much, it has all been taken away from me. Maggie’s made me feel warm and accepted. I was listened to. I have done some courses where for that hour I forgot everything, an hour of normality.”

Rachael added: “I had been told to go to Maggie’s for information, but they gave us so much more. I left Maggie’s for the first time feeling strange, I felt like I couldn’t wait to come back to Maggie’s with Chris. I always hear laughter from the room where Chris is in at Maggie’s, and it warms my heart to and that’s thanks to Maggie’s.”

Out of the 2.8 million people in Cheshire and Merseyside about 17,000 people are newly diagnosed with cancer every year– both figures are higher than the England average.

James Sumner, Chief Executive of NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, said: “As part of the old Royal Liverpool University Hospital demolition process, we have been working closely with partners to develop a masterplan that will have the health and wellbeing of our patients and local communities at its heart.

“We are delighted to be welcoming Maggie’s as the first new partner onto the site of the old Royal. The services they offer to support people with cancer will be hugely beneficial to the people of Liverpool.” 😊
