Liverpool City Council has given the green light for plans at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital that will improve vehicle and pedestrian access, make it easier to move across the site, and create new outdoor wellbeing spaces around the hospital, helping improve the experience for patients, visitors and staff.

This phase focuses on the infrastructure we need now, while also putting the foundations in place for future development in the years ahead.

We’re proud to be working with BAM and the The Eden Project to help transform parts of the former site into greener, nature-rich spaces in the heart of the city.

We look forward to sharing the improvements.

Today we’re celebrating Admin Professionals Day and recognising the vital role our admin colleagues play across our hospitals 🫶

Mother and daughter duo Kelly and Pat Riley are just two of the many colleagues who help make sure our services run smoothly and that our patients are supported and cared for every day.

Both work in the Patient Access team at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, where together they have spent a combined 35 years welcoming and guiding patients from the main reception desks 🛎

Kelly said: “We like working with each other, which may come as a surprise. Sometimes I accidentally call her ‘mum’ in front of patients, which always leads to questions.

“We are never less than a few steps away from one another in work or at home as we live across the road from each other. I’ve always looked up to her - she sets such a good example. Our patients and visitors are very lucky to have such a kind and compassionate person to turn to, as am I.” 🥰

Pat added: “I’m very proud of Kelly. I love what I do – if I didn’t, I wouldn’t have been at the Royal for 24 years.

“It’s incredibly rewarding when you see a patient smile, or their stress lift when you can point them in the right direction.

“We’re just a small cog in a huge admin team supporting patients across all our hospitals, and I’d like to wish all my colleagues a very happy Admin Professionals Day.” ❤

Teams from across NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group were delighted to take part in a project designed to support people with learning disabilities know more about the importance of cancer screening.

The film series, entitled ‘Check It Out’, was produced in collaboration with People First Merseyside, a self-advocacy organisation run by, and for, people with learning disabilities. The videos walk the viewer through the importance of cancer screening, including bowel, breast, cervical and lung, as well as the process of attending screening appointments and what this involves.

They feature members of People First Merseyside alongside real clinicians from the respective screening services in the local area. Last month, UHL Group colleagues were invited to see the films for the first time, and on the big screen, at a special premiere event held at Crosby’s Plaza Cinema.

Paula McCann Finney, Nursing Team Leader from the Lung Cancer Screening service at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, who starred in the lung cancer film, said:
“It was a privilege to be asked to be part of these films which aim to support people with learning disabilities to make informed choices about cancer screening.
“Having seen the videos, they would be helpful for anyone who wants to know more about why cancer screening is important and what is involved. The message is clear, go for your cancer screening and ‘check it out’.”

Lisa Campbell, Mammographer at the Breast Unit at Broadgreen Hospital, also appeared in the breast screening video, and shared:
“I was delighted to be able to help with this project which provides a valuable opportunity to share a useful set of resources for patients and their families. The videos provide reassurance and answer questions patients may have before they visit us for their routine mammogram.”

This , we’re highlighting how our Colore**al Team have been dedicated to improving the service for patients 🩵

“We have enhanced the service so that we focus on the different parts of the bowel separately, meaning specialist nurses can tailor the advice provided to patients and offer dedicated follow-up care. We also have our main Colore**al team, the Small Early Re**al Team, Watch and Wait Team and the Complex Pelvic Service,” said Rachel Quinn, Lead Colore**al Nurse.

Our Colore**al Service has clinics and teams at the Royal, Aintree and they also work in collaboration with the Liverpool Women’s Hospital providing the Regional A**l Intraepithelial Neoplasia (RAIN) service (a precancerous condition) to ensure patients in our community are receiving the most suitable service for their needs.

Rachel added: “We’re continuously making improvements to provide an enhanced service for patients. We want every patient across the city to have the same quality service. If you have any concerns or symptoms, contact your GP and get checked so you can get the support you need.”

Bowel cancer, which includes colon and re**al cancer, is one of the most common cancers in the UK, so it’s important to know the symptoms and, for those over age 50, to take part in screening so it can be caught early.

Symptoms of bowel cancer can include:
• blood in your poo (stools)
• bleeding from the back passage
• a change in your normal bowel habit.

Professor Terry Jones was interviewed by Granada Reports, after a new report shows that the North West has some of the highest rates of head and neck cancers in the UK 🎥

The report highlights how smoking, alcohol, HPV infection and higher levels of deprivation all increase the risk of developing the disease.

Professor Jones said: “Patients in our most disadvantaged communities remain more likely to develop the disease and present at a much later stage, which has a profound impact on survival.”

Spotting symptoms early is vital ‼️

You should seek advice from your GP or dentist if you experience:

- A new lump in the neck lasting 3-6 weeks

- Mouth ulcers/swelling that hasn’t healed after three weeks

- Unexplained hoarseness lasting longer than three weeks.

A programme we are offering to help newly qualified, returning and international nurses confidently transition into working at our hospitals, has received a national award 🏆

Our 12-month Preceptorship Programme has been awarded an Impact Award by RCN Foundation

The awards recognises the dedication and forward-thinking of the Precetorship team, who with help from Mary's Place, run wellbeing days to help preceptees better manage self-care, and in turn the care they are then able to deliver to our patients 🥰

Vanessa Loftus, Practice Development and Preceptorship Lead, who received the award on behalf of the team, explains why the programme is so important 🎬

Join Our Big Conversation to share your views on our new five-year strategy, which uses population health data to set out how services and the way they are delivered can be shaped to meet the needs of people today.

This is a once in a generation opportunity to make bold changes and transform services for the communities we serve 💙

The strategy is ambitious and rethinks how and where care is delivered, to improve the health and quality of lives of the communities in Liverpool and the wider city region.

Learn more and share your views by 5pm on Thursday 2 April 2026 at http://www.uhliverpool.nhs.uk/about-us/our-big-conversation.
