Surgical Start ‘Surgical Start’ was established by a group of doctors and medical students with the passion of pursuing a career in surgery.

‘Surgical Start’ was established by a group of medical students with the passion of pursuing a career in surgery. With the increasing competitive nature of the surgical profession, it has become more important than ever to demonstrate a keen interest in the subject, with both practical and academic ability and knowledge. Our aim is to deliver a range of surgically orientated seminars and skills days, led by doctors and surgeons with experience in their respective fields.

Hey everyone! My name is Harindi and I am the West Midlands Rep for Project Cutting Edge (PCE). For those of you who haven’t heard of PCE, it’s an organisation set up by Alex Yao, who scored maximum points in his Core Surgical Training interviews. PCE is dedicated to providing lots of useful hints and tips to medical students and F1/F2s keen on pursuing a career in surgery. If you’re interested in surgery and want to know how to get ahead of the game, check out the PCE website (https://www.projectcuttingedge.com/about/) or the newly published book - they go through all the sections of the CST Portfolio, as well as providing information about surgical careers and having the right mindset.

It’s a very good place to start, especially if you’re a medical student considering a surgical career but no clue where to start (like I was!).

Any questions at all - let me know and I’ll do my best to help :)

Following the success of our first suturing events, Surgical Start is proud to present the return of our ‘Suturing Course’ for foundation doctors and all years of medical and dental students interested in pursuing a career in surgery. This course aims to provide a hands-on introduction to a variety of surgical skills and suturing techniques.
This course will cover the following objectives:
* Be able to perform ‘gowning’ and ‘gloving’ correctly in accordance with the recommended standards of practice
* Be able to correctly handle and use surgical instruments
* Tie a variety of knots, including surgical reef knots and the Aberdeen knot
* Learn a variety of suturing techniques, including interrupted, continuous, subcuticular and mattress suturing
* Understand the pathway towards a career in various surgical specialties.
The course will be taught by a number of doctors supported by clinical medical students. We aim to provide all attendees with the basics of practical surgical skills, which will not only enhance applications for future career positions, but also equip you with the knowledge to provide a foundation on which to further develop your technique.
We have set out a brief overview of the format of teaching you can expect on the day:
* Each skill will be demonstrated on a step-by-step video and presentation
* Following this, each pair of students will be allocated to a teacher who will be responsible for supervision of the attendees practising the technique
* At the end of the day you will be assessed before certificates are awarded
For your participation in this fantastic opportunity, all participants will receive:
* A DVD showing the step-by-step instructions to perform each suturing technique
* A written guide on the step-by step instructions to performing each suturing technique
* A certificate from Surgical Start
Price: £15

Foundation year is a new experience for every medical graduate and it can be quite tough and confusing, that's why Surgical Start presents "FYnone to FYone"!

Come join us to learn about how to survive foundation year and make the most out of it. We wont talk about fluid management or discharge letters, instead we're gonna be talking about stuff people don't actually tell you about FY1! Things like taking leave, managing finances, taking a year out, building a portfolio and last but not the least, junior doctor contracts! So, get over to the event page and sign up for a space. Also, there's gonna be Free Pizza!!
