Having a high and regular consumption of fatty foods can cause an unhealthy gut.

Burgers, chips and fried foods, are harder to digest, and in cases can cause heartburn and stomach pain.

Instead of grilling and frying foods, try lean fish and semi-skimmed milk instead of the usual fattier, unhealthier options.

It’s vital that you take care of your gut health, as an unhealthy gut can make you feel unwell and off-balance.

You may not realise it, but chronic stress can have a huge impact on our gut, and our body as a whole. Therefore, we need to lower our stress levels in order to keep healthy.

You can lower stress by getting more sleep, creating schedules, meditating, going for a work or taking a break and doing something you enjoy. When stress is lowered, we will feel mentally and physically less exhausted and more focused and ready for the day ahead.

You need to make sure you’re getting your nutrients throughout the day, and a great way to do this is by ensuring that you consume your 5 a day. Fruit can help to keep us more energized, and have a high rate of vitamins and minerals within them. They also help to reduce the risk of diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.

How much coffee do you drink?

Drinking caffeine can help to keep us alert, but when you’re ready to sleep, this can also keep us lying there wide awake.

Caffeine affects slow-wave sleep - the deep sleep that’s needed for brain hygiene.

This diminishes if you have caffeine in your system overnight, which means you’ll be feeling a lot more tired and unproductive the next day, especially as you’ll be craving more coffee in order to get you through work.

Are you taking care of your wellbeing?

Neglecting our bodies when we’re busy can be detrimental to our health, and we can find ourselves becoming vulnerable to illnesses if we begin to ignore our body’s needs.

Having 3 meals each day, making sure you have enough fruit and veg in your diet and reducing processed foods and food high in fat, salt and sugar are all ways that we can control the health of our bodies. Picking a sweet yet healthy alternative as a snack (e.g. swapping a chocolate bar for an apple) will help to keep our bodies healthy and our minds sharp.

Are you spending your working days reading emails, and staring at screens?

Whilst this can be bad for our eyesight, it can also cause stress. Being focused on work 24/7 isn’t good for our mental states, and we need to be able to distinguish between work life and home life. We can start by switching off devices and logging out of work-related accounts when our days at work are over.

Instead of consuming your life online, spend time away from devices. Being on them constantly can have huge effects on our health, including eating – if we’re focused on a screen when eating food, we won’t be taking notice of how much we’re eating or what foods we are putting into our bodies.
