πŸ† BAM Construction Scores 45/45 in Considerate Constructors Assessment

We are pleased to announce that our contractor and partner, BAM Construction, has achieved an excellent score of 45/45 in the Considerate Constructors Scheme assessment for the Royal Liverpool University Hospital Phase 2 infrastructure works.

The Estates and Facilities team is proud to work in partnership with BAM Construction on this significant project. Funded by the New Hospital Programme, the work includes creating a new extended podium and improved vehicle access to the main hospital entrance. The new entrance will improve access for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, with a further link to Prescot Street commencing in 2026.

The independent assessment awarded maximum scores across all three categories:
βœ… Respect the Community - 15/15
βœ… Care for the Environment - 15/15
βœ… Value their Workforce - 15/15

Steve Gerard, Associate Director for UHL Group Hospital Redevelopments, said: "The scores achieved are testament to the teamwork that BAM and UHL Group have demonstrated in setting out standards to succeed in this very important criteria."

Rob Bailey, BAM Construction Director, said: "We're proud of the excellent standards achieved across the project. Our team has shown strong commitment to community engagement, environmental responsibility, and health and safety. It's been a great example of hard work and collaboration from our client and the site team."

The project is expected to be completed in autumn 2026. Well done to the BAM Construction team on this excellent achievement.

πŸ“Έ 'Who Cares Conversations' Exhibition Opens at Aintree University Hospital

We're thrilled to celebrate the official opening of the 'Who Cares Conversations' exhibition, which took place on Thursday 11th December in one of the main corridors at Aintree University Hospital, NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group.

This powerful exhibition showcases thermal camera images capturing the 'heat signatures' of our dedicated Aintree Hospital Theatre staff, reflecting on the vital role of touch in their work and how it adapted during the pandemic.

Created by dance artist Angela Woodhouse and visual artist Caroline Broadhead, with videographer Dominique Rivoal, the project invited staff to participate in a unique residency in 2024. Each participant considered a gesture of touch that could be recorded using thermal imaging – whether through a pose, body movement, or heat mark left on an object – creating their own personal 'heat signature'. The thermal camera registers the heat emanating from the body and objects, ranging from red through yellow to gradients of blue.

The exhibited prints are selected screenshots from the videos. The opening event brought colleagues together to witness their unique heat signatures now displayed in the hospital corridor, creating a powerful sense of belonging and appreciation for the essential work they do every day. πŸ™Œ

This exhibition represents a strand of the ongoing 'Who Cares' project, funded by Arts Council England, Middlesex University and supported by Inspace, Edinburgh. We extend our appreciation to Paula OMalley, Joanne Nelson and Nicholas Lown, and to Hospital Arts in Liverpool, for making this inspiring project possible.

πŸ₯πŸ‘₯ Governors and NEDs Visit at Royal Liverpool University Hospital

On Thursday 21st November, non-executive directors and governors visited the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, for an engaging tour of Estates and Facilities operations.

The visit included exploring the new hospital's domestic services base in CSSB, experiencing the retail food offerings across Level 0 and Level 10, and observing patient food service in action. The group received insights into the decommissioning and demolition plans for the old Royal, alongside the Strategic Masterplan that sets out the future direction for the site.

The visit proved highly valuable, with David Gilburt (Non-Executive Director), Graham Kemp (Governor), and Jim Conalty (Governor) commending the team for the impressive standards maintained and the informative experience provided.

Our thanks go to Steve Gerard, Judith Joughin, Jane Ireland, Kerry McArdle, Ian Reid and all the staff who made the visit both informative and memorable, showcasing the dedication and expertise that drives operational excellence across our services.

🌟 Introducing Our First E&F Shining Star - Catherine Crewe! 🌟

We're thrilled to celebrate Catherine, our newly appointed Assistant Domestic Manager at Broadgreen Hospital, as our October winner!

Since joining in July, Catherine has made an incredible impact. When three clinical areas failed audits, she led their complete recovery - working directly with clinical teams and personally conducting weekly follow-ups to restore confidence in our standards.

What really impressed our judges? Catherine's hands-on approach during challenging times. She's been right there supporting her team through staffing pressures, driving training compliance, and keeping quality standards high while still learning the ropes herself.

The E&F Shining Star award celebrates colleagues who go above and beyond through innovation and real impact. Catherine exemplifies exactly that.

Congratulations, Catherine! πŸŽ‰

πŸ† National Recognition at IHEEM Healthcare Estates Awards 2025

We're delighted to share that our colleague, Vincent Hart, Head of Estates at Broadgreen Hospital, NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, has won the Diversity and Inclusion Award at the IHEEM Healthcare Estates 2025 Awards! πŸŽ‰

Vincent's award celebrates his transformative work with Project Search, our supported internship programme for young adults with learning disabilities and autism. Through his dedication, Vincent has created genuine pathways to employmentβ€”personally mentoring interns, advocating for permanent roles, and breaking down barriers in our profession. His impact speaks for itself: one intern he supported as a maintenance assistant has progressed to become a site manager for a healthcare building. Vincent has also challenged longstanding gender stereotypes by championing a female intern within our traditionally male-dominated estates team, demonstrating that technical roles in healthcare are truly for everyone.

This national recognition reflects the commitment across our Estates and Facilities department, and throughout UHL Group, to create an inclusive environment where everyone can contribute and thrive. The award was presented on Tuesday 21 October 2025, at The Kimpton Clocktower Hotel in Manchester.

Vincent, congratulations on this well-deserved recognition. Your dedication inspires us all! πŸ‘

Patients at Aintree University Hospital are enjoying an extended and more varied menu at mealtimes following the completion of a Β£10m purpose-built kitchen facility and launch of a new heated meal trolley service, mirroring the successful approach taken at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and Broadgreen Hospital.

We have partnered with Apetito, which professionally prepares the meals which are then frozen immediately to lock in nutritional value and flavour, delivered to us and then stored in our purpose-built kitchen. Meals are then reheated using Burlodge equipment on the ward just before service, so patients receive hot, quality food at their bedside. The upgraded service offers patients much greater menu choice including traditional and international dishes, special diets, and clear allergen information.

Our catering staff worked together with our dietitians to deliver this improvement and feedback from patients and staff has been extremely positive following a soft launch earlier this month.

β˜• Another Fantastic Cuppa with a Copper Success!

Yesterday's Cuppa with a Copper event at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group was a huge success with the biggest engagement so far to date! Over 80 staff members and members of the public connected with Merseyside Police, demonstrating the strength of our community partnerships.

Merseyside Police officers provided expert advice on incident reporting, bike marking, local area safety, and domestic violence support. Staff received valuable advice leaflets and practical giveaways including bike marking kits, phone marking services, phone holders, handbag clips, panic alarms, and RFID blockers.

A particular highlight was the opportunity for our Domestic Violence lead to meet with Merseyside Police colleagues, allowing both teams to share insights and strengthen their collaborative approach to supporting our community.

A big thank you to Merseyside Police and all our staff who made this such a successful community initiative! Looking forward to our next session at Broadgreen Hospital alongside our LHCH colleagues next month.
