Thinking of using ChatGPT for anxiety? Read this first
More clients are coming into therapy sessions are now talking about advice they have been given by AI.
Some of it sounds helpful but there may be some important things to be aware of.
Here is what to understand:
1. It does not have lived experience
AI can give information, but it does not understand what you are going through.
2. It does not recognise emotional limits (affect tolerance)
In therapy, we work carefully within what feels safe and manageable. AI does not know your limits and may suggest things that feel too much.
3. It cannot attune to you
A therapist listens, adapts, and responds to you in the moment. AI cannot tune in to your feelings or needs.
4. It misses the body and nervous system
Anxiety is not just thoughts, it's your body, memories, and nervous system all of which play a role. AI focuses on words, not your full experience.
5. There is no safeguarding
Therapists are trained to recognise risk and respond safely. AI does not hold this responsibility
6. It can sound right, but be misleading
The answers can seem clear and confident, but may be too general or not right for you.
You deserve real support
At SFTA, we understand that change happens through safe, human connection, not just information.
AI can be useful for learning, but it cannot replace therapy.
