Optimise Acupuncture Michael Phillips - Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine in Liverpool and surrounding areas

Driven by my own passion for rock climbing, both the practice and philosophy, my early work was as a rock climbing coach, introducing and coaching people of all ages, in all things climbing-related. After 13 years I moved into arboriculture; working as a tree surgeon throughout Merseyside, utilising my climbing skills, with the added benefits of being outside, caring for nature, and hanging out with the birds. I discovered Chinese Traditional Acupuncture after receiving remarkably effective treatments myself and becoming fascinated by its effects, mechanisms, and nature-orientated philosophy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. These treatments and the ensuing study literally changed my life by presenting an ancient perspective on life, health and human beings that resonated with me strongly.

I completed my Bachelor's Degree in Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Northern College of Acupuncture in York; three years of eye-opening theory and accompanying supervised clinical practice. During this time I also completed a diploma in Sports Massage, finding soft tissue work to combine well with Acupuncture.

In my free time, I enjoy being out in nature, exercising, reading, meditation, and relaxing.

In TCM, willpower (known as Zhi) is rooted in the Kidney system.
If your reserves are low, motivation fades. It’s not because you’re weak, but it can be a sign that you’re depleted.

Acupuncture is often used to support rest and recovery so your drive can naturally return.

You don’t have to force anything when you have the right support

Did you know what acupuncture means? Most people don’t realise that in traditional Chinese medicine it’s not just about needles but about guiding energy and adding warmth.

Using moxa is a big part of acupuncture as well as the needles.

It’s an ancient practice that can support your whole body to find balance and uncover new healthier patterns

Gina is now 39 weeks pregnant, so I’m giving her an acupuncture treatment to help her body prepare for labour. Here’s what we’re working on today:

🪡 Stomach 36 – known as the “point of vitality”. It helps to boost energy/chi, nourish the blood and strengthen the body for birth. It’s great for overall wellbeing and stamina as Gina approaches labour.

🪡 Gallbladder 34 – supports the sinews and tendons, easing tightness and helping with flexibility and movement. It can also benefit the hips and pelvis as the body gets ready for baby’s arrival.

🪡 Spleen 6 – a key point for labour preparation. It helps soften and ripen the cervix, supports uterine activity and promotes hormonal balance. We only use this point when the body is ready, it’s contraindicated until late stage pregnancy.

🪡 Bladder 60 – encourages downward energy flow and can help baby move into the optimal position for birth. This is another point contraindicated until late stage. It’s also used to relax the lower back and pelvis, bringing a sense of release and readiness.

✨ Acupuncture can be a gentle, supportive way to help the body do what it’s naturally designed to do and prepare for birth.

All treatments are bespoke to what your body needs. If you’d like support throughout your pregnancy (or postnatally) do get in touch 🙏
