Stay safe on the water

Stay safe on the water

Canoeing and kayaking are both popular recreational and competitive sports and can offer adventure, exercise, and fun, as well as a chance to explore nature and enjoy beautiful scenery.

Canoes and kayaks look fairly similar - they’re both types of boats and use a paddle - but there are a few differences between the two. Canoes are open, have higher sides, and can carry more people and cargo; kayaks are (usually) closed, have lower sides, and are more agile and fast. Canoes are usually paddled by one or two people with single-bladed paddles, while kayaks are normally paddled by one person with double-bladed paddles.

There are a variety of different choices in terms of the size and composition of the vessel as well as the intended number of users.

Whichever vessel you choose, it’s important to consider safety before going out on the water. Please refer to the WSS kayaking/canoeing safety code which highlights the main considerations and advice.

Physiotherapist Derek Laider (left) recently caught up with Professor Brian Dolan OBE (right in the image) Professor Dolan OBE is the nurse who is featured in The Broons deconditioning comic storylines and also the founder of the campaign.

Prof Dolan OBE, originator campaign provided us with his testimonial for the campaign below.

Deconditioning, the physical, psychological and function decline that occurs as a consequence of prolonged bed rest and associated loss of muscle strength, commonly experienced through hospitalisation is one of the biggest harm events in healthcare and frequently hidden in plain sight.

While deconditioning has been known about, if not fully understood, since the 19th century, it’s only in the last decade that there has been a concerted effort to encourage patients to get up, dressed and moving while in hospital settings. For decades, the public were told to stay in bed while in hospital and loved ones were expected to take patients’ clothes home, leaving them in their pyjamas (PJs) or hospital gowns.

Given their model of care is about actively encouraging movement, it should be no surprise that physiotherapists have been champions of preventing deconditioning. Nor is it a surprise that Derek Laidler, as a physiotherapist in a rural hospital community setting, would be a champion who has come up with two of the most creative ways to get the preventing deconditioning and ageing well messages across to the wider public.

Every year, Prof Lynda Holt and I host a global EndPJparalysis Summit and we can’t wait to have Derek Laidler join us to discuss and celebrate this initiative with a worldwide audience and, hopefully, inspire others to pick this idea for their own territories and regions and their own local iconic comics in this original, joyful and empowering means of sharing public health messages with children of all ages!
