The HSCP's Joint Strategic Plan 2026-2031 has been developed and will be presented to our Integration Joint Board on 27 May. We would like to thank those members of the public, staff and our stakeholders who took part in the engagement process that helped with the development of the Plan. The full document will be published following the Board meeting; however, in the meantime, we have produced a Plan on a Page graphic which highlights some of the key information.

Meet Sara Kerr, Argyll and Bute HSCP Newly Qualified Integrated Midwife, Oban Community Maternity Unit, based at Lorn & Islands Hospital READ SARAโ€™s Blog below!

A career in Midwifery had always been something that interested me. After over 10 years in nursing, I was delighted when I was successful in my application to the Shortened Midwifery Programme through NHS Highland and Edinburgh Napier University.

Many of my nursing skills are, of course, transferable and very relevant to my new career in Midwifery; at the same time, Midwifery is completely different. The last 16 months as a qualified midwife have been both extremely rewarding and at times challenging. I am sure most midwives will agree, the real learning starts once you are in post!

My job in remote and rural midwifery means that I am lucky enough to support women and their families throughout their whole journey to becoming parents โ€“ from the early pregnancy days, right through to the postnatal period. I am privileged to work in a team where we have consistently high rates of continuity, something we know is associated with positive outcomes. I love getting to know the women and families on our caseload and supporting them to make decisions that are best for them.

Every day is certainly different and unpredictable too โ€“ you can be carrying out routine appointments one moment, and the next be in the back of an ambulance on a transfer to the Obstetric Unit.

Midwives have a huge role to play in both maternal and newborn health; there is a massive shortage of midwives worldwide.
