🤲 You cannot beat ‘hands-on’ practical study and development. This was a fantastic day with a range of fellow professionals and set in the most outstanding venue.

👩🏼‍🎓 It was a privilege to discuss anatomy, palpation, techniques and industry talking points with those from an osteopathic, chiropractic and veterinary background.

✨ Jennifer’s insights, techniques and teachings have transformed the way I will now think about treatments, with much greater focus on the joints causing muscle spasms - in the true osteopathic approach, you have to reveal the origins of the dysfunction, rather than simply treat the symptoms.

🐴 And the setting was sublime! It really reinforced some of my own ideas about holistic horse care and certainly gave me food for thought about how we can happily and successfully co-exist.

✨ I have met some lovely new, like-minded people and look forward to seeing them all again. This day made me feel really excited for the future ✨

Some great advice from Westgate Labs on winter worming.

❄️🐛🐴 There is one dangerous parasitic stage of the small redworm that we need to be particularly aware of at this time of year as it can have fatal consequences. Winter is the season to consider how we tackle the possibility of encysted redworm. This means either blood testing or treating with an appropriate wormer.

Between December and February is time to
✅ test or treat for the possibility of encysted redworm
✅ reduction test to ensure treatment has been effective
✅ Have you tested for tapeworm in the last 6 months? EquiSal test if required.
✅ Are you in an area where you need to consider bots?

💊 If we need to treat then a moxidectin wormer is the preferred choice for most horses - a 5 day fenbendazole is the other option which may be considered especially for youngsters or those who are very lean. We should also use this opportunity to reduction test to ensure our worming has been effective, particularly if using the latter chemical.

🪱🐴 Do you have a repeat offender? Horses that continually come back with positive EquiSal tapeworm test results can be a worry. It's a tricky balance between treating to break the lifecycle and building resistance with frequent exposure. In light of this the experts at EquiSal Tapeworm have released new guidance on re-testing and management techniques to consider.

The advisory comes after recently published research found a lack of efficacy to both praziquantel and pyrantel, our only licenced treatments for equine tapeworm (Nielsen 2023).
