londonballetclasses

londonballetclasses London Ballet Classes help adults access the benefits of dance and movement, no matter their age or experience.

We are passionate about making ballet more accessible, inclusive and fun! We provide dance lessons and workshops for everyone, from complete beginners through to advanced. Since our launch in 2018, we have introduced thousands of adults to ballet for the first time, and a whopping 92% of first timers choose to return - so you are in very good hands. If you have always wanted to learn but have never had the chance, or are keen to get back into the swing of things, it really is never too late :)

We aim to transform your experience of ballet, maximising your fun and your progression. As well as enhancing your technique and skill, all of our classes and workshops are designed to develop your artistry, musicality and individual style. We believe ballet is to be loved and enjoyed, not just mastered. This is our philosophy and something that underpins all we do. Dancers are born at the important intersection between challenge and passion, and our classes are the perfect combination of both! Drop-in adult classes that really nurture and support you in the same way as children’s classes or pre-professional training programmes are rare; but it is our mission to change that. Our Sunday classes are specifically focused on introducing adults to professional repertoire taken from the most iconic classical ballets, instilling a deep appreciation for ballet as an art form, not just a sport! We work on one variation for several weeks, with an optional 'Solo or Performance Week' at the end. This provides students with the time and support to better understand and execute movements, expressively and effectively and work towards performances. Repertoire focused lessons enable Intermediate and Advanced students to challenge themselves but it is an equally fantastic opportunity for beginners too! Our Beginner classes teach simplified versions of classical choreography, which is a great way to develop a strong and meaningful foundation for your future ballet practice. This approach establishes a strong understanding of ballet terminology as well as better coordination and muscle memory. But most importantly; musicality, stage presence and performance quality are integrated into our teaching model from the beginning; staying true to dance as a beautiful instrument of storytelling and connection. We complement our Sunday repertoire lessons with general drop-in lessons focused on form and technique - in the studio and online. Depending on the level, this will either help Beginners establish a solid foundation for their ballet practice or help intermediate students work on steps and sequences which will aid in the execution of challenging choreography or variations over time. Our studio drop-in classes take place on Wednesdays and have a focal area every month, targeting specific areas; ranging from turnout, extensions, jumps, turns, flexibility and coordination. We know many of our students have worked up to an Intermediate level as adults or are returning to ballet after a long break; so we want to ensure that your ballet journey is sustainable. Our technique classes break down and help you understand how to execute movements functionally, effectively and in such a way that you minimise risk and injury. Our classes centre on giving individual corrections, feedback and support to maximise individual progression and support students in transitioning to the next level. In addition to our classes, we also deliver an annual series of workshops and events alongside virtual and in person intensives. We regularly partner with high profile dance professionals from ballet companies as our guest teachers and artists. Whatever you are looking for we have something for you! All of our work is centred around championing diversity, inclusivity and joy. We are building a supportive and encouraging community, and our classes always feel like a big family get together. They are full of us clapping for one another, cheering each other on and celebrating our wins. We know it might feel intimidating to join your first class, but we promise you won't regret it! Don't miss out on all the fun we are having - come and join us :)

⭐️ Announcing our next Variation of the Month ⭐️

📍 Sundays at The Place, Kings Cross
12, 19 and 26 April 2026

5 - 6.30pm: Intermediate/Advanced (in this class we teach the original choreography)

6.30 - 8pm: Beginners/Improvers (we teach a simplified version that captures the essence/style of the choreo)

🌟 Week 3 (26 April) is an (optional) performance day in classes. A wonderful chance to set yourself a goal of performing this piece (solo or in a small group 😍)

About this variation:

This variation is from a beautiful ballet in the Romantic ballet style. It features a sylph, a mythical spirit of the air who embodies delicacy, freedom and weightlessness. As you will see in the video, movements are characterised by an airy and fluid quality, to create the illusion of continuous suspension and flight. The goal is to blur the boundary between Earth and air - and make it look light and easy!

This month, we’ll focus on ballon - the bouncy quality in jumps, soft cushioned landings and of course expressive épaulment, which is so important in this role, and in the romantic ballets in general. To achieve the effortlessness and delicacy of this performance, we will also work on refined use of the upper body and explore different arm variations.

Swipe to the end to see clips of the phenomenal Lis Jeppesen perform this variation. A perfect sylph 🥹 ✨.

…..
And a reminder that our Thursday evening Technique classes support our variation classes, so if you would like extra support with some tricky steps from the routine, join us Thursdays at WAC Arts studio in Belsize Park.

Each month we have a selection of focal steps based on the variation, that we breakdown and practice in an open class format. (Note: Our Technique classes also split into Intermediate/Advanced and Beginner level too). In our Intermediate classes we will focus on jumps and batterie in the centre with a particular emphasis on ballon (bounciness and elevation). In our Beginnere class we will focus on sissones, with clean take offs and landings.

Follow Along Friday 🎉

This week’s exercise is a sneak peak from our Wednesday Beginner Pointe class: featuring controlled échappés, releves in fifth and a supported balance at the end.

From fifth we échappé onto pointe, close back to fifth, releve in fifth and finally we end with a transfer of weight to the back leg and a short balance, with the free foot placed softly at cou-de-pied (with the barre there for light support).

It’s a simple combination, but there’s a lot to work on:
• articulating clearly through the feet as you open and close the échappé
• arriving centred and cleanly on the box without jumping onto it
• organising the weight in a balanced way as you return to fifth
• maintaining length through the ankle and legs as the working foot comes to cou-de-pied

In our Beginner Pointe classes we take time with exercises like this to build strength, coordination and confidence on pointe. By slowing it down, you can check that the closing/landing of the échappé is clean and well placed, this is what will help you to translate this movement into the centre later and to eventually add speed :)

Tip if you’re following along: try not to rush. Moving a little slower challenges you to stay lifted through the legs and ankles, rather than sinking into the shoe. It also gives you more time to self-correct placement and build strength by sustaining the position. We want to aim for a controlled ex*****on of échappés, rather than doing them super fast and using momentum more than muscle. Save this for your next practice ✨

Sharon 🥹❤️❤️❤️

If you’ve been following this account for some time, you’ll be familiar with Sharon, who has been dancing with LBC since our early days, she also films and edits so many of our Sunday solos and workshops 🙏🏽 and is a beautiful dancer and all around human being!

It is so emotional seeing these two clips side by side because her first Giselle performance seems like yesterday, rather than six years ago! There has always been so much heart and emotion in everything she does and you can feel it whenever she dances. Thank you for coming back to ballet - you were absolutely meant for it 🥹

P.S late to the party but finally sharing my thoughts on Timothee’s pathetic little comment 🤣

Ballet isn’t just something we perform or try to master or sell, but instead, a way of life. It may be for a season or forever, but anyone who loves it knows it’s a heartfelt commitment to art, music, connection, storytelling, vulnerability and to knowing the self.

Dance is a place to nourish the soul, challenge the body and be in community. We’ve been dancing since the dawn of time and we will be until the end of time because it’s an essential and irreplaceable part of being human.

This short clip felt the right way to throw in my two cents - and say yes, ballet is very much alive, it inspires aliveness and I have no doubt that it will continue to do that very important job. This is not at the expense of, or in competition with, the various other mediums that also do that beautifully.

Real value cannot be measured in numbers, or rankings or popularity contests. It can only be experienced to be known. Nor does it have to be big, global, trending. Whether I am watching dancers on a big stage or the passionate students in our studio lessons, the aliveness always touches and moves me. There will always need to be spaces for that to happen and for us to witness it 🩷

So - to all the artists, musicians and pioneers who have dedicated so much to this art form - and equally important, to all who love it, have felt joy or connection or healing in it, we value your contribution and participation. The future of ballet looks pretty amazing to me 🩷

Salomé in our first Variations en Pointe workshop. So beautifully done! This role requires lots of musicality, softness and fluidity in the upper body. It’s a beautiful first variation to try en pointe because it isn’t too long and mainly focuses on bourrees and temp liés. Huge welldone to everyone who participated.

Announcing our next Variation of the Month ✨⭐️

📍 Sundays at The Place, Kings Cross
🗓 1, 8, 15 & 22 March 2026

5 – 6.30pm: Intermediate/Advanced
(In this class we teach the original choreography)

6.30 – 8pm: Beginners/Improvers
(In this class we teach simplified version which still captures the essence & style of the piece)

🌟 Week 4 (22 March) – optional in-class performance day. A chance to work towards dancing this as a solo or in a small group 💫

About this variation:

Set in the Pasha’s palace, the 1st Odalisque Variation from Le Corsaire is short but dazzling. The choreography echoes a lively petit allegro: fast, virtuosic, and full of finesse. Expect brisk brisés volés, cabrioles, and intricate batterie woven into a playful and sprightly solo.

The tempo demands sharpness and light, suspended jumps that travel quickly and cleanly. While technically challenging - the solo should never feel mechanical. Each step must appear effortless and precise. Dancers should aim for speed without tension — precision in the lower body and an upper body that remains fluid and elegant.

✨ This month we’ll focus on agile footwork, batterie, and musical clarity.

Swipe to the end to watch the stunning Ana Turazashvili (Bolshoi Ballet) perform this variation 🤍✨

Use the link in our bio to sign up — click Sunday 1 March to book Week 1 😍

…..

And a reminder 💡
Our Thursday evening Technique classes support the variation classes.

If you’d like extra help with batterie, allegro sharpness, or travelling jumps, join us Thursdays at WAC Arts Studio, Belsize Park. 6.30pm for Intermediate/Advanced and 8pm for Beginners.

Each month we select focal steps inspired by the variation. Throughout March you can expect a focus on:

Intermediate/Advanced: brisés volés, cabrioles, batterie & petit allegro precision

Beginners: light allegro foundations, ballon, coordination & clarity

✨ A gentle reminder that this is the final variation of term! We do have some special workshops lined up on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 March, after which we are closed for Easter break! There are no classes between Monday 30 March and Monday 6 April. Our spring term kicks off on Tuesday 7 April! 🤍
