4 Effective Intermittent Fasting for Weight Loss

When it comes to weight loss, you will find a myriad of information on the internet, but there is one method that is gaining popularity nowadays called intermittent fasting. This is not a diet plan, it makes use of time approach method of eating. It will not give you definite foods to avoid and what to eat. Intermittent fasting for weight loss has been proven effective by many people who tried it. However, one should evaluate if this is suitable for them and this article will help you find out if this regimen suits you.

This is a way of eating that involves short term fasting and eating fewer calories in a day to boost a hormone responsible for weight control. The first thing that you need to know is that there are diverse methods that you can use if you want to take advantage of this approach to weight loss.

1. 16/8 Method- This method will require you to skip your breakfast and start your meal at noon and you can only eat until 8 in the evening. It means that you will do a 16 hour fast and consume foods in an 8-hour time frame.

2. East-Stop-Eat Method- This method is done by 24-hour fasting for two days a week. For instance, you will not eat from dinner today until dinner time the next day.

3. 5:2 Method- This method will only allow you to eat between 500 to 600 calories for two days then the rest of 5 days you can eat using your regular diet.

The key is to not compensate the hours of days you do not eat by eating much during non- fasting days or hours. Fasting for weight loss is effective if you will eat in moderation and use a well-balanced diet.

The following are ways on how you can effectively do intermittent fasting for weight loss.

1. Know your Personal Goal
People who want to begin their intermittent fasting need to set a goal. The most common set goals are to lose weight, increase metabolic rate, or improve overall wellbeing. By setting up a goal, it can help you to determine what method is suitable for you. This will also give you the idea of the number of calories you need every day and nutrients that your body needs.

2. Know your Caloric Needs
As mentioned earlier, this method of fasting does not restrict calorie intake, but it does not mean that you do not have to count your calories to reach your goal. Calorie intake per day depends on different factors such as height, current weight, and lifestyle. An important reminder is to only consume calories that you can use a day. If you have an active lifestyle, then you can increase your calorie intake. For 16 hour fast, you do not have enough energy in the morning so make sure that you only carry out mild to moderate physical activities.

Today, you can make use of modern technology by downloading applications that can help you determine your needed calorie intake a day or consult a nutritionist to guide you.

3. Create a Healthy Meal Plan
Fasting for weight loss is not a type of diet, so you need to make a healthy meal plan. As you do fasting, it is important to eat foods that are rich in nutrients to replenish what is lost and to regain the energy that you need for the day. It is easier if you will make a one-month menu cycle. You do not have to restrict yourself with your favorite food, but make sure to stick to your desired calorie intake.

Meal planning is not that easy to do, but it can offer a lot of benefits like easy calorie counting, on hand recipes for meals and quick snacks, and cost-efficiency.

4. Nutrients Dense Foods
Foods have different nutrients and equivalent calories that you need to become aware of while in intermittent fasting for weight loss. It is vital to consider the nutritional value of food before adding it to your meal plan.

Adding nutrient-dense foods in your meal means you consider the number of nutrients present per calorie. Although you can still eat fast food or chips, you need to consume these empty calories in moderation and be mindful of healthful food choices.

6 Foods Good for Kidneys

The kidneys are bean-shaped organs found under your ribcage, at the back of the abdomen. Kidneys have essential functions in the body. Their main job is to filter waste, produce urine, and secrete hormones that manage blood pressure. Blood vessels in the kidneys can be harmed by high blood sugar levels and uncontrolled blood pressure. Damage in the kidneys can lead to chronic kidney disease. According to the National Kidney Foundation, 10% of the global population has chronic kidney disease. When kidneys are impaired, they cannot do their tasks properly. When this happens, waste products can pile up in the blood. People who diagnose with kidney disease should follow a renal diet. This diet focuses on minimizing the amount of waste in the blood by limiting potassium, sodium, and phosphorus. A renal diet is advised for people with late stages of chronic kidney disease.
Potassium is an electrolyte that plays essential functions for the body. However, people with kidney disease must restrict their potassium intake with less than 2,000 milligrams a day to avoid high blood levels. Sodium should also be limited to 2,000 milligrams per day since impaired kidneys cannot filter extra sodium. Excess phosphorus, just like in the case of sodium, could not be expelled by damaged kidneys. Hence, individuals with kidney disease should limit their intake to 800–1,000 milligrams a day. If you want to know some foods good for kidneys that may help you prevent the disease and keep your kidneys healthy, this article is for you.

1. Cauliflower
Cauliflower is on top of the list among foods good for kidneys. Cauliflower is rich in nutrients like folate and Vitamins B, C, and K. It is also an excellent source of fiber and anti-inflammatory compounds. What makes this vegetable great for kidneys is that it contains low sodium, phosphorus, and potassium. A cup of cooked cauliflower only has 19 milligrams of sodium, 40 milligrams of phosphorus, and 176 milligrams of potassium.

2. Berries
Another food you may add to your kidney stones diet is berries. Dark berries like blueberry, raspberry, and strawberry are good sources of antioxidants and other nutrients that protect body cells from damage. Berries are healthy fruits you can munch on if you are craving sweets. Berries contain only a few sodium, potassium, and phosphorus and are therefore kidney-friendly. A cup of fresh blueberries has 1.5 milligrams of sodium, 114 milligrams of potassium, and 18 milligrams of phosphorus. Blueberries have anthocyanins which fight off diabetes, cognitive decline, and heart disease.

3. Garlic
If you are on a kidney stones diet, make sure not to leave out the garlic. Garlic has several health benefits. It also gives meals a rich flavor that cuts down the need to add salt. Garlic contains healthy sulfur compounds, manganese, vitamin B6, and vitamin C. A nine-gram clove of garlic has 1.5 milligrams of sodium, 36 milligrams of potassium, and 14 milligrams of phosphorus.

4. Olive oil
Olive oil has zero phosphorous, which makes it an excellent cooking oil for individuals with kidney problems. Olive oil is blessed with healthy fats like oleic acid, a healthy monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid. This acid lessens body inflammations. The monounsaturated fats that olive oil contains can withstand high temperatures, and so these healthy fats do not easily go away even when cooked. One tablespoon of olive oil only has 0.1 milligrams of potassium, 0.3 milligrams of sodium, and no phosphorus. Although olive oil contains many calories, it can be beneficial for people with severe kidney disease who find it hard to lose weight.

5. Cabbage
Cabbage belongs to the family Brassicaceae which includes other green, leafy vegetables. Cabbage contains insoluble fiber that is good for your digestive system. It is also rich in vitamins B, C, K, various minerals, and other plant compounds. A cup of chopped cabbage has 13 milligrams of sodium, 18 milligrams of phosphorus, and 119 milligrams of potassium.

6. Buckwheat
Buckwheat is a whole grain food that can serve as an alternative to other whole grains with the high phosphorus content. Buckwheat contains fiber, iron, magnesium, and vitamin B. A ½ cup of cooked buckwheat has 3.5 milligrams of sodium, 74 milligrams of potassium, and 59 milligrams of phosphorus.

5 Heat Stroke Symptoms and Causes

During the summer, it is fun to go outdoors and enjoy the heat of the sun. But excess exposure to the sun’s heat may cause heat exhaustion. It may also lead to stroke if not treated. Sunstroke is a condition where the body is overheating. It is when the body’s temperature rises to 104 F (40 C). It is the result of prolonged exposure to places with high temperatures. Such a condition is expected during the summer.

Important Note:
Heat exhaustion is different from heat stroke. It is not usually serious, but if not treated right away, it will lead to heatstroke. Cooling down for 30 minutes prevents exhaustion. It will lower the chance of having a heatstroke. Suppose you are experiencing heavy sweating, fast pulse, and heat cramps. Move to a cooler place, stop all the activities, and rest. Hydrate yourself. Drink cold water or a sports drink.

What are the causes of heatstroke?
1. Intense Activity
It is not good to do activities that need a lot of strength while exposed to high temperatures. Your body’s ability to adjust to the high heat depends on your age. If you are very young, your central nervous system has not yet developed. It becomes harder to last in the hot weather. The same happens for adults over 65 years old. It is because your central nervous system is declining.

2. Wearing too many clothes.
A thick layer of clothes prevents the body from cooling down. Wearing these kinds of clothes during the hot weather does not allow the sweat to evaporate. As much as possible, do not wear thick jackets and avoid wearing layers of clothes. Wearing these kinds of clothes is not meant for the warm weather. Try wearing clothes that are more breathable and looser.

3. Drinking alcohol
It may affect your body’s ability to balance its temperature. Alcohol widens your blood vessels. If the blood vessels are wider, more blood will flow to your skin. That makes you flush and feel warm.

4. Not drinking enough water.
It is important to hydrate during hot weather. Our body needs to replenish the fluids lost from sweating. When you sweat a lot, you will get thirsty. It is because our body loses the fluids that our body needs. To make up for the lost fluids lost. We need to drink plenty of water.

5. Lack of proper air circulation.
Without proper air conditioning during hot weather increases the chances of sunstroke. It is hard to breathe in a place with no proper ventilation. Our body needs oxygen, and without it, our body would not be able to do its function.

Heat exhaustion that is left untreated will lead to heatstroke. The most common heatstroke symptoms are:

1. High body temperature.
High body temperature is the main sign of heatstroke. Hence, it can happen when the body has a temperature of 104 F (40 C) or higher. To know your body’s temperature, use a thermometer.

2. Changes in behavior.
One might feel confused and upset because of stammering speech. Also, some may become very irritable. It is possible to experience fainting and seizures.

3. Change in sweating.
Heatstroke during hot weather makes the skin hot and dry. Activities that use too much strength also cause heatstroke. In this case, your skin would feel dry and moist.

4. Skin Redness
You could see your skin turning red as your body temperature increases. It is because there is a large amount of blood flowing in your vessels. So, the skin turns red. Our body can regulate its temperature during summer when the weather is warm. Aside from the widening of blood vessels, the body releases heat in the form of sweat. It is the body’s way to adjust body temperature to make it safe for organ systems.

5. Increased heart rate.
Since your breathing pattern has changed, it may also affect your heart rate. Heat stress puts a burden on your heart to help the body to cool down.

You need to be aware of the heatstroke symptoms and causes. It can prevent it from worsening. If not treated right away may cause complications. Like, vital organ damage and death.
