⚠️ Important Safety Notice: Recall of Emerade Adrenaline Auto-Injector Pens ⚠️
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued an official safety recall for Emerade 300 and 500 microgram auto-injector pens, commonly used for the treatment of anaphylaxis. It has been identified that these pens may not deliver the correct dose of adrenaline when activated, potentially posing risks to patients during severe allergic reactions.
In light of these concerns, we strongly advise all patients who rely on Emerade pens to take immediate action. Please contact your GP or local pharmacy without delay. They will facilitate the exchange of your Emerade pen for an alternative brand that ensures the accurate delivery of adrenaline.
The MHRA recommends switching to trusted alternatives such as EpiPen or Jext. We understand that transitioning to a different device can be worrisome for some individuals. Therefore, we encourage you to seek guidance and support from healthcare professionals to ensure the proper usage of the replacement pen.
We kindly request that you return your Emerade pen only after receiving a replacement from your healthcare provider. Based on our estimations, approximately 25,000 individuals may possess an affected Emerade pen.
It is essential to note that the MHRA has previously expressed concerns regarding similar incidents where Emerade pens failed to deliver the intended dose.
Severe allergic reactions, known as anaphylaxis, can be triggered by various factors including certain foods (nuts, milk), medications, insect stings, and latex. If you experience symptoms such as lightheadedness, fainting, difficulty breathing, or a rapid heartbeat, it is crucial to administer adrenaline promptly.
Dr. Alison Cave, MHRA Chief Safety Officer, highlights the significance of this recall, stating, "We are taking prompt action to protect patients, following detection of damage to internal components of the Emerade pens if they are dropped, which may mean they activate too early or fail to activate and deliver adrenaline."
We urge all patients to adhere to the standard practice of carrying two pens with them at all times and contacting their healthcare professional when a replacement is due. By following these precautions, we can ensure that you have the necessary means to effectively manage severe allergic reactions.
If you have any concerns or require further information, we strongly encourage you to reach out to your GP or pharmacist. They are fully equipped to provide support and guidance throughout this process.
Please prioritise your health and take the necessary steps to safeguard your well-being.
