A huge round of applause to these incredible skydivers who raised over Ā£5,000 for Age UK Isle of Wight! šŸŖ‚

This week, a team of eleven fundraisers took the plunge with a thrilling 10,000 ft skydive over Sandown Airport, all in support of Age UK Isle of Wight. Amongst the adrenaline junkies was the incredible Helga, aged 73, who has already completed four jumps. By raising over Ā£5,000, their fundraising has helped us continue to provide older people with support and advice when it’s needed the most.

A massive thank you to all the skydivers who made the jump for Age UK. šŸ™Œ

Unfortunately, it's not uncommon for disabled people to be accused of exaggerating or even faking their impairment or condition. This is often due to misunderstandings about what it means to be disabled.

Experiences of disability vary from person to person, and the needs of some conditions change regularly.

If someone who uses a wheelchair sometimes can also walk, that doesn't mean they're ā€˜faking’ their impairment or condition. It means their needs can fluctuate.

If someone’s need for a disabled parking badge isn’t obvious, that doesn't mean they're being misleading. It means their disability is invisible or less visible.

Disabled people need allies, not people who try to catch them out.

Refugees and asylum seekers are 5 times more likely to have mental health needs than the general population.

That’s why The Solace Project, run by Tyneside and Northumberland Mind, is so incredibly needed.

This project is run with St Vincent de Paul - a community centre in Newcastle. They bring asylum seekers together, helping them build connections. And they offer group and 1 to 1 mental health support.

Many refugees have fled their home because of persecution due to their sexuality. So they work with Rainbow Home too - to provide extra support for the LGBTQIA+ community.

The Working Together to Safeguard Children Guidance, paragraph 83, states: -

ā€˜Whatever the timescale for assessment, where particular needs are identified at any stage of the assessment, social workers should not wait until the assessment reaches a conclusion before commissioning services to support the child and their family. In some cases, the needs of the child will mean that a quick assessment will be required’.

Our Nottingham Me Time services recently completed numeracy courses.

Attendees completed money management courses overseen by a tutor from our partner Inspire Learning. This will help many people we support who are looking to move into supported living where they will be more independent.

Participants enjoyed the course and said it improved their ability and confidence. šŸ‘

Happy 102nd birthday to Irene Carling! šŸŽ‰

Irene, who was awarded an OBE from the Queen, was born in Middlesbrough and enjoyed a happy childhood with summer holidays spent camping in a ball tent in Saltburn.

Irene marked her special day surrounded by friends and family with a party at her nursing home. When asked about the secret to a long and happy life, her granddaughter Emma said, ā€œHer recipe is having a big heart, never giving up, and just having the ability to laugh.ā€

Happy birthday to you, IrenešŸŽˆ
