Plăcintă, from the Latin word placenta which means flat cake, is a traditional Romanian fried pastry or a thin cake consisting of flour, water, eggs, milk, yeast, and a pinch of salt. This fried or deep-fried pastry is enjoyed warm, and it is usually stuffed with a sweet or savory filling.

A great variety of fillings can be used for the stuffing, including branza cheese, sweet cheese, mashed potatoes, shredded cabbage, apples, jams, and sour cherries, to name a few. Plăcintă’s texture and consistency can range from light and fluffy to doughy and crispy, resembling a flatbread.

Ryba po grecku is a traditional fish dish originating from Poland. Although there are variations, the dish is usually made with a combination of fish fillets (cod, haddock, tilapia, perch, pike, etc.), carrots, celery, leeks, parsley, onions, oil, tomato paste, lemon juice or vinegar, bay leaves, paprika, salt, and pepper.

The fillets are seasoned with salt and pepper, fried in oil on both sides, and set aside. The carrots and celery are grated and mixed with the other chopped vegetables before the mixture is sautéed over medium heat until soft. Near the end of cooking, the rest of the ingredients are stirred in and everything is sautéed for a few more minutes.

Utopenci is a popular Czech dish that is commonly served in pubs and bars as a snack. It consists of sausages that are pickled in a tangy marinade with bay leaves, onions, black pepper, and other spices. The dish is traditionally eaten cold with white bread.

The name utopence is translated to drowned men due to a belief that the inventor of the dish drowned while he was working on his mill. Others believe that the name comes from the fact that the sausages are drowned in the marinade.
