There's a lot of breath-work techniques out there right? 🤯 And generally they address two things:

1. Biomechanics - the way you breathe (as featured in the picture!). This is something company director speaks about a lot and is usually focused on diaphramatic breathing - breathing that is lower down in the body. ✔️

2. Cadence - the length of your breaths. This can range from slowing down the inhale and exhale, slowing down just the exhale or even techniques like box breathing which focus on short retentions of breath too. ✔️

But one extra thing that we focus on at The Happy Healthy Body Co. is the BIOCHEMISTRY of breathing. Addressing the actual physiology which has the power to honestly (not being dramatic here) change the way we function and impact massively on our well-being. 👏🏻

JOURNALING - do you journal? 📝🤓

At The Happy Healthy Body Co. we deliver all kinds of well-being sessions and today we’re talking to a company about journaling.

Our founder recently discussed her own journaling on Instagram and this is what she shared:

⏰ When?! - I like to journal after meditation! After my meditation I will sit and journal the experience I had, any thoughts that came up and then finish with anything else that is going on for me or that comes to mind. But you can journal whenever you like! Think of it as a new habit you can either stack with another one (like mine and meditation) or a new one you can start or end your day with.

❗️It doesn’t have to be coherent!! 🫠😅 - for most people nobody else is ever going to read what you wrote. So why does it have to make sense?! Just let your mind do the writing and let what comes out onto paper come out 🤍

❓”But if nobody is going to read it, what’s the point?!” - getting our thoughts out onto paper can be an extremely cathartic thing to do. If we have a busy or racing mind, writing anything and everything down can help to make sense of your thoughts, bring relief to the mind and maybe help you organise and prioritise a little better.

If you want to try but an empty notebook is intimidating then you can invest in some brilliant journals that have prompts and intentions within them. do some beautiful ones. 🤍

Want a quick way to calm you down and settle your nervous system?

Feeling stressed or need to get yourself a good nights kip? 💤

Elongating your exhales is one of the best ways to encourage the relaxation response in your body. 👍🏻

When we begin to slow the respiratory rate (breaths per minute) to 5.5-6 breaths we activate a nerve called the vagus nerve. 🤓 This nerve governs our fight and flight system and is going to help take us into a state of clarity, calm and restfulness.

Ratios such as Inhale for 4 and Exhale for 5/6 (with a lovely natural pause after the exhale) will begin to do this.

If you suffer with any kind of panic or respiratory disorder then this may be a big challenge for you so take it slow. Start by simply slowing down the exhale to a place of comfort for you and go from there.

Today on Morning Live they were discussing how many people suffer with breathlessness and the various interventions used to help those suffering. 🌬

We were so pleased to see this being discussed as feeling breathless affects both mental and physical well-being in huge ways. 👎🏻

One thing that we notice is often omitted however from these breath-work programmes is the biochemical element of breathing. And YES, it's time to get a bit science-y over here! 🤓🧪

Biochemistry in terms of breathing is the relationship between Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Oxygen (O2). Being overly sensitive to the presence of CO2 will lead to breathlessness and it will also inhibit delivery of O2 to the rest of the body... in simple terms, when we are overly sensitive to CO2 we WON'T be getting Oxygen delivered optimally to the tissues and organs of the body, including the brain! 🧠

That's a pretty big deal if you need to concentrate and use your noggin at work... 🤯

The great thing about working with us here at The Happy Healthy Body Co. is that we can address this issue with simple exercises that can be implemented immediately and into every part of our lives. ✅

It starts with AWARENESS. Recent feedback from working with employees at was that awareness of their breathing throughout the day had improved... ultimately awareness is how we make real change and how we can tackle the plethora of issues that keep us from excelling physically and mentally. 🦸

How are they different? ❔💤

When it comes to sleep hygiene we have the common (and very useful) tips such as:
- no screens before bed
- dark and quiet room
- cooler room
- fixed wake up time
… among other things!

These are of course hugely important but even with all of these things they won’t make a difference if your sleep QUALITY is poor.

If you are waking up with a dry mouth in the morning or feel very tired throughout the day the chances are you are mouth breathing at night and your sleep quality is low. 👎🏻

Over time, heavy breathing and mouth snoring could lead to more serious conditions such as and OSA ( ) which will impact overall health significantly.

Addressing the way you breathe when you sleep directly impacts the way you breathe when you’re awake and vice versa.

So how can we find that lovely, balanced sweet spot in the middle there? 🤔

Our bodies are truly incredible when it comes to looking after us. They are constantly doing all they can to keep us safe and in a state of homeostasis (balance) and in doing so, we constantly move in and out of our stress and relaxation responses.

The term “stress” is often thought of as that horrible thing that happens when we have too much going on or we’re simply overwhelmed. But “stress” in terms of the nervous system is something that’s necessary to keep us functioning.

❓Too much stress? We tip into that fight or flight response.
❔Too little stress? We feel lethargic, dull and sapped of energy.

Now, the amazing (yet slightly troublesome) thing about the autonomic nervous system is that it’s quite easy, especially in this achievement-driven world we live in, to get a bit stuck in one response or the other - more often than not, the stress response of course. 😵‍💫

For example, we may have developed the habit over time of breathing through the mouth or taking big, deep breaths up into the chest. This harder, faster way of breathing signals to the body there’s something wrong and it then keeps us in that up-regulated state. ❌

Learning how to down-regulate is usually how we work with clients first as we work with individuals and companies in highly stressful jobs or situations. But it’s important to have the tools to up AND down-regulate. Having the tools to give yourself a burst of energy when you need it (before an interview or pitch for example) or to calm yourself down in a moment of overwhelm is a real game changer.
