So how can we find that lovely, balanced sweet spot in the middle there? 🤔
Our bodies are truly incredible when it comes to looking after us. They are constantly doing all they can to keep us safe and in a state of homeostasis (balance) and in doing so, we constantly move in and out of our stress and relaxation responses.
The term “stress” is often thought of as that horrible thing that happens when we have too much going on or we’re simply overwhelmed. But “stress” in terms of the nervous system is something that’s necessary to keep us functioning.
❓Too much stress? We tip into that fight or flight response.
❔Too little stress? We feel lethargic, dull and sapped of energy.
Now, the amazing (yet slightly troublesome) thing about the autonomic nervous system is that it’s quite easy, especially in this achievement-driven world we live in, to get a bit stuck in one response or the other - more often than not, the stress response of course. 😵💫
For example, we may have developed the habit over time of breathing through the mouth or taking big, deep breaths up into the chest. This harder, faster way of breathing signals to the body there’s something wrong and it then keeps us in that up-regulated state. ❌
Learning how to down-regulate is usually how we work with clients first as we work with individuals and companies in highly stressful jobs or situations. But it’s important to have the tools to up AND down-regulate. Having the tools to give yourself a burst of energy when you need it (before an interview or pitch for example) or to calm yourself down in a moment of overwhelm is a real game changer.
How do you feel about this? We’d love to know you thoughts and experiences.
Drop us a message or email to collaborate. We love working with companies and individuals on helping them sleep better 💤 , perform better 💥 and feel more energised ☀️ and motivated at work.
Happy Tuesday all!
