From rising panic to a calm night's sleep 💤
Our dog, Bramble, has been very poorly recently, and the other night, it sent me into panic mode.
My mind went into overdrive. I was googling and letting my mind go to worst-case scenarios 😫
I could feel the anxiety rising and the panic taking over, so I decided to reconnect with my body through breath work and meditation.
I started with breath-work to take the edge of the the panic, slow my heart rate, stop the tingling and dizzy sensations I get when I panic, regulate my breathe and start to move me out of fight or flight. Once the symptoms had started to ease I moved onto meditation.
👀 For the first 5 minutes, my thoughts were crazy all over the place, I could feel the tears welling up, the want to just do anything other than meditate.
💭 10 minutes in, the pace of my thoughts started to ease, and I started to feel the sensation of anxiety drop further.
😌 By the time I’d finished, I felt more grounded and significantly less anxious. I was able to think more rationally and put forward in my mind evidence to the fact that Bramble would likely be ok and that my panic was triggered by a previous event when he had been incredibly ill.
This allowed me to have a good night's sleep, which meant my body could go into rest and digest rather than sleeping like it was waiting for a tiger to pounce!
I woke up feeling better and more regulated, which meant I had more energy, was able to work out, wasn’t tired and generally felt ready to face the day calmly and confidently.
From previous experience I know if I hadn't have chosen to do the breath-work and meditation in that moment I would have lain awake for hours, probably got myself into even more of a state, had minimal sleep and spent the next day in high anxiety, not worked out and eaten a load of rubbish.
This is the power of breath-work and mediation!
