What’s Neurodiversity?

The term neurodiversity refers to variation in the human brain regarding sociability, learning, attention, mood and other mental functions.

Neurodiversity advocates point out that neurodiverse people often have exceptional abilities alongside their weaknesses.

ADHD, Autism and dyslexia to name just a few neurodevelopment conditions do NOT need to be cured but understood and supported!

My dyslexia has meant it has had its challenges but the strengths of the way my brain works outweighs these and I have worked hard to overcome these challenges!

Neurodiversity should be celebrated and people should not be made to feel less than!

Let’s talk Mental Health 💭

As a passionate advocate for mental health awareness and a trainee child and adolescent psychotherapist

it is SO important to be conscious of the fact that we all have mental health, and just like physical health we can have difficulties at times that may lead to a longer term illness.

For children, who are already dealing with so much in this current climate, it’s important that we give them a platform and a voice to talk about issues that will be impacting on them mentally!

Let’s remove the stigma of mental illness! Let’s open the discussion to everyone to promote mental wellness in all!

Let’s talk positive self talk for children!

How can we teach our children positive self talk when the going gets tough.

Children face new experiences all the time. Trying something new or starting a new healthy habit can test even the most motivated grown-ups. So how do you teach your children to motivate themselves in the face of a challenge?

That's where the power of positive self-talk comes in. Whether you’re trying to get your child to try a new sport so they can be more physically active or trying to change their attitude towards reading and writing, positive self-talk can give them the motivation they need to succeed.

Positive-self talk can give your children the ability to change feelings of “I can’t” to “Yes, I can.” They may feel better to learn that everyone has doubts – and even grown ups have setbacks. Positive self-talk can help them keep going so when they fall down, they have the confidence to get back up again.

Let your children know that using positive-self talk takes practice. Just like they need to run and play to make their muscles and heart stronger, practicing positive self-talk helps their minds get stronger so they can make healthy choices and develop an “I can” attitude!

It’s important to be mindful of the language you use around your children. Take care to use positive and encouraging words when they are finding things difficult, and encourage them to use the same positive language.

💭 LETS TALK PROBLEM VS SOLUTION FOCUSED LANGUAGE

As adults we often forget the impact our words can have on children. We may not even realise the language we use is problem focused. Our words can really affect a child’s self esteem.

Rather than using problem focused language, for example describing a child as hyperactive, use positive focused language, for example a child is full of energy.

Particularly for children who have special educational needs they may often see their difficulties as a negative because they are bombarded with problem focused language.

If we use positive language we can celebrate their differences!

Let’s fill their self esteem buckets up so full that that the world can’t poke enough holes to drain it dry!

A PROBLEM SHARED

Problems! We all have them and for children facing daily challenges, particularly if they have additional difficulties such as a speech and language disorder then they may find it difficult to articulate how big the problem feels to them.

With every behaviour you see there is an underlying message that the child can’t articulate with words. What might appear to be a small problem to the adult may be big to the child and their reaction will be big because the problem perceived is big.

I find using visuals with children and young people to talk about the size of the problem, and size of their reaction really helps children understand their reactions to problems and get a better understanding of the reality of problems and their perspective size.

By talking problems through with the child will help them cope better with any problems they may be faced with and will develop resilience.

This is a visual I regularly use in therapy with children who are struggling to cope with their emotions. If a child can learn to regulate their emotions then they are all around happier and can cope better when faced with problems.

LETS TALK EMOTIONS

Here are 8 basic emotions you can talk to your child about. Where they may be struggling to articulate what they’re feeling on the inside, giving them the necessary vocabulary and labelling the emotion will help them to express what’s going on in their minds. It will also help them to link physical feelings to what they are experiencing emotionally.

By acknowledging your child’s feelings and subsequently, validating them, you can support them to work through their feelings and help them regulate. You’ll be able to help them manage difficult / overwhelming feelings for themselves and develop coping strategies that will build their resilience. There are many visuals like this one you can use.
