Yesterday we sang for a lady whose life-long love of choral music showed in the choice of Handel's Hallelujah Chorus- our first time performing this as a quartet! We chose Parry's sublime and moving "Crossing the bar" to see the guests on their way at the end.

In this Proms season, it was our pleasure yesterday to perform the best of popular classics to honour a gentleman who loved The Last Night of the Proms: Ni**od (Lux aeterna); The Lord's Prayer from the "African Sanctus", Land of Hope and Glory (of course!) and this absolutely stunning arrangement of the Pearl Fishers Duet.

The sadness of a repeat booking: we sang for a couple's golden wedding anniversary in March and today were called upon to sing at the wife's funeral. As today's Gospel read, to everything there is a season. Sometimes the seasons come close together then one would expect.

It's been a busy week for our soloists. Franck's "Panis angelicus" is a perennial favourite at Catholic funerals, and was performed today at Z's funeral Mass in Purley.

Two years ago (almost to the day) we sang for S's husband. Today, it was her turn. As she was a devoted fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber, it was fitting that we sang his "Pie Jesu" at her funeral.

The incensing of the coffin is an important final part of the Catholic funeral Mass. One of our soloists learnt and sang this requested version, new to us, of 'May flights of angels', in Coulsdon today.

The comforting words of Psalm 23 are part of many Christian funerals. P's son was looking for something special to honour his choir-loving mum, at today's funeral. He came across this video of us singing Schubert's setting, and decided it was perfect.

The highest form of flattery for the choir is to be "asked back", though the reasons for a repeat visit are always deeply poignant. We sang at T's funeral in 2022, and returned today to sing for his son. The family chose to have exactly the same music, and to augment the choir by two singers. To keep everything as similar as possible, we used a core of the same four singers for son, as we had for father.
