‘Kate/Katherine, Princess of Wales, turned to Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine amid her Cancer Journey which she also used whilst pregnant.
Speaking to therapist Amanda Green during her 2 July 2025 visit with patients at the Colchester Hospital, Kate spoke candidly about her cancer journey, treatment & recovery, in her first public outing after treatment, mentioning that she had tried acupuncture.
While speaking to a group of patients about different techniques offered by the hospital's cancer well-being center, the Princess of Wales said, "What seems to be really fantastic is that there is a real personal approach: what helps one person – acupuncture or something – might not help another".
Kate also received acupuncture treatments while pregnant with all 3 of her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, when she suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum, which causes morning sickness.
"You put on a sort of brave face, stoicism through treatment. Treatment's done, then it's like, 'I can get back to normal,' but actually, the phase afterwards is really, really difficult,' " the Princess of Wales said.
"You're not necessarily under the clinical team any longer, but you're not able to function normally at home as you perhaps once used to," she continued. "And actually, someone to help talk you through that, show you and guide you through that sort of phase that comes after treatment, I think is really valuable."
Kate described a cancer diagnosis as "life-changing" for both the patient and their families, acknowledging the shock and emotional "roller coaster" that comes with it.
"You have to find your new normal and that takes time...and it's a roller coaster, it's not smooth, like you expect it to be. But the reality is you go through hard times," she said.
In March 2024, the Princess of Wales announced that she was undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer she said was detected following an abdominal surgery she had had that January. The royal had to cease her duties to focus on her health and shared in September that she completed chemotherapy.
In January 2025, Kate announced that she was in remission following a visit to The Royal Marsden Hospital, where she previously received treatment.
Kate has made a full return to royal work in the months since; whilst acknowledging that it's about striking the right balance as she eases back into public duties.
The Mayo Clinic explains that acupuncture is a key aspect of traditional Chinese medicine, in which thin needles are inserted at strategic points across the body. The method is used to treat pain or to boost general wellness, including stress management.

Researchers discovered that this specific type of collagen could keep cancer in the dormant phase, preventing it from spreading.

Just to add that efficiency of acupuncture goes beyond pain management or relaxation 🙂

Just to add that efficiency of acupuncture goes beyond pain management or relaxation 🙂

A randomized, controlled clinical trial conducted in the Duke University Hospital emergency department shows that providing acupuncture to treat acute musculoskeletal pain in addition to usual care is feasible even in this busy setting, and can reduce pain better than usual care alone.

Round One of the Lingshu Labs is FULL. Round 2 will start accepting students in early 2025. For those that did miss out, recordings will be available to catch up if you wish.

For those few who have contacted me but are yet to compete registration, you are still welcome to join. A reminder we start on the 29th September! An email and details with links will be coming your way this weekend.

Lingshu Labs is a community project that is still very much in its infancy. I have some wonderful plans, research, clinic, and more in stall for the future of this project, including some wonderful guest speakers, adjunct learning materials, and much much more. I also want to be conscious and open to ideas on how to make this project as enjoyable and educational as possible.

A reminder that the INR Clinical Neijing Program will be starting in 2025 too - a true immersion into the practice of this medicine. Stay tuned for registration details in the coming weeks!
