THE PLACENTA ❤️
The placenta is a temporary organ that you make with each pregnancy, connecting you with your baby 👶🏼👶🏾 It delivers nutrients to your baby and eliminates waste. It also produces hormones to sustain the pregnancy 🤰🏽and each is as unique as a fingerprint!
The delivery of the placenta is the final part of birth and often brings women a lot of relief! Part of our role as the midwife is to check the placenta, membranes and the cord to make sure it’s all complete.
These photos are of Kate explaining the placenta to Mum, Daughter and Grandma, who all wanted to touch and feel it! It’s good to think about what you may like to do with your placenta - it does belong to you after all! Here are some ideas below:
❤️ BURY IT
You could bury your placenta and plant a tree or flower over it that will grow with your baby, either in your own garden or somewhere meaningful to you.
❤️ MAKE ART
You can make art prints of your placenta, these often look like trees 🌳
❤️ EAT IT
You can have your placenta dehydrated and made into capsules or you can freeze it and add small parts to smoothies each day (Scroll to see the last picture as an example!)
❤️ DISPOSE OF IT
If you no longer want your placenta, your midwife can take it away and have it incinerated 🔥
