Is a Care Home or Live-In Care the Best Choice?

It’s Not That Simple.

When it comes to elderly care, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. The question shouldn’t be Which is better? but rather Which is right for you or your loved one?

The truth is, care homes aren’t for everyone, and live-in care isn’t suitable for every situation. What matters most is awareness and choice.

Right now, care homes are often seen as the default, simply because families aren’t always aware that good alternatives exist. Our job at the Hub is to change that—to educate, inform, and empower people to make decisions that meet their needs, wishes, and preferences.

Because when people have choice, they have control. And when they have control, they can make informed, confident decisions that ensure the best possible care for their loved ones.

The challenge is that most families begin looking for care in a time of crisis. Feeling overwhelmed, they often move their loved one into the first ‘good enough’ care home without fully exploring all options. We need to start having these conversations earlier—before a crisis forces a rushed decision. Planning ahead allows families to make choices that align with their loved one’s needs and preferences.

Shockingly, 53% of over 75s have never had a discussion about who will care for them if they need it in later life, and 59% have not talked about their preferences for end-of-life care. These are crucial conversations that shouldn’t be left until it’s too late.

Let’s keep the conversation going—have you explored both care home and live-in care options for yourself or a loved one? What factors influenced your decision? Was it personal preference, financial considerations, level of care needed, or something else? Share your thoughts and experiences!

Who looks after the people that look after people?

Caring for a loved one is an act of deep love and dedication. But for many family carers, it also comes with overwhelming stress, exhaustion, and isolation. They push through, often in silence, believing they have no choice but to carry on alone.

Yet, the numbers tell a different story:

🔹 71% of carers have poor physical or mental health.

🔹 84% feel more stressed.

🔹 78% experience anxiety.

🔹 55% struggle with depression. (Carers UK)

Family carers are not invisible. They are not alone. And they should not have to suffer in silence. Today is , let’s start a conversation. If you know someone caring for a loved one, reach out. Ask them how they are—really. Offer a listening ear, a moment of respite, or a helping hand.

A simple “How are you doing?” could mean the world to someone who feels unheard. Because no one should have to carry the weight of care alone.

Time to Talk Day is the nation’s biggest mental health conversation. It’s a day for friends, families, communities and workplaces to come together to talk, listen and change lives. Time to Talk Day is run by Mind and Rethink Mental Illness, in partnership with Co-op and delivered by See Me with SAMH (Scottish Action for Mental Health), Inspire and Time to Change Wales.

In just under two weeks, we’ll be hosting a webinar as part of on Trauma & Resilience Informed Practice – what it is, what it isn’t, and how it can make a meaningful difference.

During this session, Dr Warren Larkin will define key terms and present a compelling case for change, offering valuable insights into how we can adopt trauma-informed approaches to transform services and support individuals more effectively.

Meeting the increasing demand facing services with an increasingly depleted workforce (both in terms of numbers and resilience), while at the same time creating and investing in prevention is the huge challenge we are faced with.

This challenge may seem insurmountable, however, we know that by adopting a to trauma and adversity we can transform population health within a generation if we have a shared, long-term commitment to preventing childhood adversity, supporting child and family wellbeing, detecting and mitigating the impact of trauma more routinely and promoting resilience across the life course. Dr Larkin will also talk about the nature of resilience, staying well at work and the power of relationships.

We’re very much looking forward to providing this session for Leeds Safeguarding Adults Board. We’ll explore some of the controversies and focus on practical ‘next steps’ that organisations and teams can take to move forward.
