?Missing teeth? - You may be asked to see an orthodontist, in this case they identified a wisdom tooth obstructing the upper left molar from aligning in the mouth. The brave patient was referred to me for removal of the obstructing tooth and this will aid the molar to erupt into a natural position. Top down photos of surgery in action😷

The difference a release can make! Baby was brought in at 3 weeks with difficulty feeding. On review there was a severe restriction of the tongue movement. The lower jaw was being forced to close reducing the ability to latch. Following release, there is an improvement in jaw opening and feeding overall.

Paediatric Oral Surgery at Loveteeth Dental Clinic, Worcester Park

12 Year old ABP had impacted upper second molars, the X-ray revealed they were trapped by developing wisdom teeth. With the help of inhalation sedation he was able to undergo surgical removal of the wisdom teeth in clinic, avoiding the need for a hospital visit and general anaesthesia.

Baby was brought to due to poor weight gain and bottle feeding difficulty. There was severe restriction of tongue movement and following a quick laser release, the tongue was able to elevate and protrude with ease.

On my check in days later, baby was feeding well and went on to gain weight well.

Tongue tie can have serious consequences for baby’s health. It is vital to see a surgeon that can perform the release safely and only when deemed necessary.

What does a tongue tie release look like for my baby?

One of the key benefits of laser operated tongue tie release is the reduced bleeding from the wound. This is one of the reasons many families prefer this option.

Following the release we can expect to see a delicate diamond shaped wound at the floor of the mouth and base of tongue which is initially yellow in colour. As this heals it can become white or pink. This is normal and part of the healing process. This can take place over several days.

Why does my baby have a white tongue?
It’s common for milk to settle on a newborn’s tongue. This isn’t thrush or a sign of infection. It can happen when baby has a shallow latch, causing milk to pool instead of being swallowed fully.
This sweet 1 week old needed a tongue tie release, and right after, they were able to achieve a much deeper latch. A simple adjustment can make a big difference.

Is this a tongue tie?

Both patients were referred to for a tongue tie consultation. One is definitely a tongue tie and the other is a normal frenum. In both cases however there were some feeding issues.

What does a consultation with one of our specialist oral surgeons look like?

Using loupes, the surgeon has a good view of the baby’s oral cavity. They will review all structures and assess tongue motility using PEEL assessment techniques.

It is vital that whichever practitioner you end up choosing to see, diagnoses tongue tie accurately otherwise the outcome of surgery will be limited.

Releasing a normal frenum will likely not lead to increased tongue motility and therefore impact feeding.

Our surgeons will be able to ascertain the cause of feeding difficulty when tongue tie is ruled out and support you. It is vital you see a practitioner who only carries out releases where it is indicated as every procedure has risks.

Mastitis is inflammation of the breast due to insufficient removal of breast milk from the breast. It can be painful and progress to infection. The guidance updated in 2022 and has moved away from management with heat to management with cold compress. You can also consider pain relief and gentle removal of the breastmilk. If you develop systemic signs of a fever then antibiotics may be suitable but you will need to consult a healthcare professional.

Feeding struggles no more!

This 2-month-old had a significant tongue tie affecting latch and feeding. After a precise laser release, baby latched beautifully right away — feeding became easier and more effective instantly.
