In the UK the lifetime prevalence of schizophrenia is approximately 1 in 100 people. Schizophrenia is a major illness. At any one time about 220,000 people are being treated for schizophrenia in the UK by the NHS.

Clozapine is a real game-changer in terms of effectiveness in schizophrenic patients - however, does have some major drawbacks, particularly agranulocytosis - hence the need for regular FBC's!

Remember, in the AKT you might be quizzed on some parkinsonism features in these patients - this is because a lot of the anti-psychotics affect the dopamine pathways of the brain, hence the features!

NICE recommend oral antipsychotics as first line with a multipronged approach in terms of holistic management. A lot of work is done to ensure patient safety also.

Sometimes anti-psychotics are given as depot injections, if compliance could be an issue.

Unfortunately, 10% of patients with schizophrenia go on to complete su***de, but the actual largest killer is premature cardiovascular disease. Hence, an annual 'SMI' check is recommended to detect this and prevent cardiovascular diseases early.
