🙋🏼‍♀️Hey, I’m Naomi 🙋🏼‍♀️

💁🏼‍♀️And I’m here to tell you how heard has transformed the way I think about noise!

🤯 Firstly, my mind was blown when I learnt that one of the biggest things we can do to protect our brain health (and prevent diseases like dementia) is to look after our hearing!

🧏🏼‍♀️ Thanks to I’m now super aware of the loud sounds around me and carry my ear plugs on my key ring, meaning I can whip them out whenever I need to.

🎶 For example, I wear them at gym classes, concerts and even the cinema.

🤷🏼‍♀️I know what you’re thinking… how are you supposed to enjoy the music and hear the film and gym instructor?

💃🏻 but earplugs only take the edge off loud noises and make them safe, they don’t take away from the experience.

🔑 I’d definitely recommend getting a pair of reusable earplugs that have a container you can put on your keys.

😅This has been a game changer for me as I know that they’re always to hand whenever the need arises!

🧐 So, is hearing loss just a normal part of ageing? 🧐

Some degree of hearing loss happens to everyone as they age. 🧓🏼

Not all hearing loss is normal though, and some hearing loss can be prevented. 😮

Noise induced hearing loss is the number one cause of hearing loss, and this type of hearing loss can be prevented by:

🎧 Wearing hearing protection in loud environments

👀 Being aware of noises in your environment

🙅🏼‍♂️ Knowing which noises are loud enough to damage your hearing

🎶 Turning the volume down to max 60% volume when listening to music on your headphones

🔊 Distancing yourself from the source of noise i.e. a speaker at a party

🏃🏻‍♀️Protecting your hearing is more than just protecting your ears from loud noise 🫐

♥️ Healthy lifestyle habits that are good for your heart, are also good for your hearing as the delicate structures in the ear need nutrients and oxygen from blood supply to stay alive

🏥 High blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes are all associated with higher risk of hearing loss, therefore it’s important to get your hearing checked regularly if you have any of these conditions.

👩🏽‍⚕️ Always speak to your healthcare professional when managing these conditions.

✨ Meet our Co-Founder, Miriam ✨

🙋🏼‍♀️ ‘After running this account for 5 months, I thought I would reintroduce myself.

👯‍♀️ Together with Bridget, our brand extraordinaire, we set up heard back in February to educate the masses about the importance of hearing health, with a focus on raising awareness around the ear brain connection.

💕 Heard is our passion project 💕

👩‍🎓It all started back in 2020 when I was undertaking a Master’s at Kings College London where I specialised in ‘Dementia Prevention’.

🧠 It was here I discovered that untreated hearing loss is the biggest risk for dementia that we can do something about.

🦻🏼 And that treating hearing loss with hearing aids… or better yet, preventing it in the first place may help to mitigate that risk.

😮And the crazy thing is, nobody knows about it.

❤️ The benefits of looking after your hearing go waaaay beyond brain health, however.

🫂 Looking after your hearing can positively impact every part of your life including your mental health, your relationships with loved ones, your work life and your physical health.

👩‍🔬 We’ve since grown an expert team to help keep you up to date with the latest research and advice.

🐘 So join the heard community and help us to spread the word and make hearing health heard.’

👂🏽 You heard it hear first 👂🏽

We know that there is a link between untreated hearing loss and dementia, but why is this the case?

🧠 The mechanisms behind why this link exists remain unclear.

👨‍🔬 Professor Frank Lin from John Hopkins University outlines the above three mechanisms that scientists believe may be responsible, however.

🦻🏼 Treating hearing loss with hearing aids or other devices may help to reduce the impact of each of the 3 mechanisms.

🧏🏼 The first step to addressing hearing loss is to take a hearing test.

🙌🏻 So take hearing test (link in bio) to check your hearing today!

Meet Professor Sarah Bauermeister, one of heard’s brain health experts from the University of Oxford. 👩🏼‍🏫

She’s referring to a 2020 study (1) that suggests that up to 8% of dementia cases could be prevented or delayed if hearing loss was addressed. 🦻🏼

Say whaaat!! 😲

The positive impacts of hearing aid use go beyond reducing dementia risks associated with hearing loss, however. Their use can indirectly impact 6 other key risk factors as well such as:

🧠 traumatic brain injury (3%)
😔 depression (4%)
🚹 social isolation (4%)
🏃‍♀️ physical inactivity (2%)
🍔 obesity (1%)
🍚 diabetes (1%)

Tune in tomorrow to find out more about why untreated hearing loss and dementia are linked 👀

Do you know the facts about hearing loss and dementia? 🧠

Tag someone in the comments who needs to know! 👇🏽

Please note, the association between hearing loss and cognitive decline is principally in relation to people with age-related hearing loss that comes on slowly over time. There is no evidence to suggest that the risk of dementia is greater in the deaf community or those who use British Sign Language.

👧🏼 HEARING AND DEVELOPMENT 👦🏾

👂🏽 Hearing plays an essential role in communication, speech and language development, and learning.

👩🏼‍🏫 Even a small amount of hearing loss can have profound, negative effects on speech, language comprehension, communication, classroom learning, and social development.

📚 Studies indicate that without proper intervention, children with mild to moderate hearing loss, on average, do not perform as well in school as children with no hearing loss.

👱🏼‍♀️This gap in academic achievement widens as students progress through school.

💥 Being conscious of your child’s hearing is particularly important given that 12.5% of 6–19 years have suffered permanent damage to their hearing from excessive noise exposure ()

🏥 So if you suspect your child may have hearing loss, contact your GP at first opportunity and get their hearing checked!
