When I was learning to drive, I was taught to religiously carry out the six-point checks before moving off.
Two of those checks required me to look over my left and right shoulders, beyond what the mirrors could show me. Those quick glances were to check for hazards hidden in my blind spots.
Miss that final shoulder check, and you could easily fail your test.
I was reminded of that lesson today during my discussion with a friend.
Blind spots aren’t just physical. They’re not only about what our mirrors can’t see on the road.
Blind spots are the unseen areas of our character.
Our biases.
Our habits.
Our triggers.
Our limitations.
The things others may notice but we don’t.
The patterns we repeat but rarely ask the question "Why?.
“There are no coincidences. Only doors you didn’t have the courage to walk through. Only blind spots you weren’t brave enough to see. Only tones you refused to admit you could hear.” — Sara Gran
Growth requires shoulder checks.
It requires the humility to pause and ask: What am I not seeing? What feedback have I been avoiding? What pattern keeps repeating in my relationships, work, or mindset?
Just like on the road, moving forward without checking your blind spots can cost you. In driving, it may cost you a test. In life, it can cost you growth, relationships, or opportunities.
So here’s a question for you:
In what area of your life might there be a blind spot right now?
And what practical step can you take to become more aware of it?
Self-awareness is not automatic. It’s intentional.
Let’s grow; safely, consciously, and courageously.
See you at the top.
