Controlling Brain Activity with Magnetic Fields

A new magnetic technology enables precise, non-invasive control of specific brain circuits, showing promise for treating neurological and psychiatric conditions.

The method, developed by researchers, uses gene therapy to deliver specialized proteins into targeted brain cells, which then respond to magnetic fields by activating or inhibiting specific neurons.

In preclinical studies, researchers demonstrated its effectiveness in mice by influencing movement and mitigating Parkinson's-like symptoms.

Unlike previous approaches, this method doesn’t require permanent implants or drugs, relying on magnets to control neural circuits with high accuracy.

Initial results showed safety, with normal ambient magnetic fields being far too weak to unintentionally activate the system.

Researchers plan to further explore the technology’s potential applications in mental health, pain treatment, and more.

Key Brain Protein Tied to Motivation and Mood Identified

A recent study has identified a brain protein, Vnut, as crucial for regulating mood and motivation in mice. Researchers found that removing Vnut from brain cells called astrocytes increased anxiety and depressive-like behavior, particularly in female mice.

This change also decreased the mice’s motivation to seek rewards, linking Vnut’s role directly to dopamine, a key neurotransmitter associated with motivation and mood.

The study used behavioral tests, where mice without Vnut showed less interest in seeking rewards and displayed more anxiety in open spaces.

Researchers identified a brain-gut connection where stress affects gut bacteria through Brunner's glands. Stress reduces mucus secretion, harming beneficial bacteria like Lactobacilli.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, blocking the Sun’s light partially or completely from reaching Earth. This alignment is possible because of the relative positions and sizes of the Earth, Moon, and Sun.

Here’s a breakdown of the process:

New Moon: A solar eclipse can only occur during the New Moon phase, when the Moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun. During this time, the side of the Moon facing Earth is not illuminated by the Sun.

Alignment: For a solar eclipse to occur, the alignment of the Sun, Moon, and Earth must be nearly perfect. The Moon’s orbit around the Earth is inclined by about 5 degrees relative to the Earth’s orbit around the Sun. This means that most of the time, the New Moon passes above or below the Sun from Earth’s perspective. However, when the alignment is precise, the Moon blocks the Sun, causing a solar eclipse.
