Debunking Mammogram Myths...

1. You need to be 50+ for a mammogram screening.

Breast Implant Illness is a term used by women who have breast implants and report a wide range of symptoms they feel are directly connected to their implants. The symptoms may vary from person to person and can include things like fatigue, chest pain, hair loss, headaches, chills, sensitivity to sunlight, joint and muscle pain, chronic pain, brain fog, anxiety, and depression.

A breast implant rupture occurs when the implant’s outer shell, typically composed of silicone or saline, tears or develops a hole, allowing the implant’s filling to leak either into the surrounding tissue (extracapsular) or remaining within the fibrous capsule that forms around the implant (intracapsular).

BIA-ALCL stands for Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma. It is a rare type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that can be a result of breast implants.

The exact cause of BIA-ALCL is not yet fully understood, but research suggests that chronic inflammation, genetic factors, and the interaction between the implant and the immune system may play a role in its development. Textured implants may increase the risk by promoting inflammation and bacterial colonisation.

Breast Implant Rupture: Whilst implant ruptures are most common in older implants, they can happen at any time. A rupture is when an implant tear inside the breast capsule, causing the filling to leak out.

Capsular Contracture: Capsular contracture is a fairly rare complication, but it can occur with both saline and silicone implants.

Necrosis: Necrosis is a more serious cause of breast implant pain that occurs when blood flow and oxygen to the area are restricted. This can result in the death of healthy breast tissue, known as necrosis.

Lymph Node Damage: If the pain persists beyond your natural healing period, there is a slight chance that the lymph nodes were damaged during surgery.

Seroma: Following breast augmentation procedures, a fluid known as serous is secreted and can gather around the incision area. If there is an excessive amount of serous fluid, it may develop a lump that can be painful to the touch known as a seroma.

Hematoma: It is caused by blood from the incision pooling and clotting around the nearby tissue causing small, painful lumps to form.
