In Mauritania, young girls are brutally force-fed a diet of up to 16,000 calories a day—more than four times that of a male bodybuilder—to prepare them for marriage.
Mauritanian girls who are engaged to be married (to a man chosen by their family) are forced to gain a substantial amount of weight in a tradition called gavage.
In their culture, having a voluptuous body full of stretch marks is considered a sign of great beauty, charm, and social status.
