What Does a Healthy Stool Really Look Like?
As a gut & digestive health specialist, I see every stool type imaginable, yet most people have no idea what “normal” bowel movements should look like.
And if you don’t know what healthy looks like, it’s hard to recognise when something is wrong.
Understanding your stool is one of the simplest ways to assess digestive health, your body constantly gives you clues!
A healthy stool should be:
Soft, smooth, and sausage-shaped (Bristol 3–4)
Medium brown with no undigested food
Easy to pass — no straining or long sits
Once daily, with transit time roughly 12–24 hours
Try the “Transit Time Test”
Eat 1–2 tablespoons of sesame or flax seeds and see when they show up in your stool.
Too fast → possible inflammation or malabsorption
Too slow → constipation or sluggish motility
Signs something is off:
• Hard, pebble-like stools (often constipation)
• Loose or watery stools (possible diarrhea or infection)
• Pale, floating, or foul-smelling stool (fat malabsorption or gut imbalance)
• Blood, mucus, or ongoing pain (always get checked)
Your gut shouldn’t be a guessing game, if your digestion isn’t working properly, you’ll feel it in energy, mood, hormones, immunity, and weight.
