For those of us who work in healthcare we don’t need a report to tell us this. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Modern lifestyles are having a chronic impact on our health. Obesity rates, chronic disease and cancers are on the rise and we don’t have a health service that’s fit for purpose. 😢

On the plus side there’s a lot of people out there looking to change the system, to find ways of supporting people better.

Preventative care is getting more attention.

📚 Education is a huge part of this.

Helping people to understand what is making them sick so they can choose to change it,

🤝 Providing affordable access to relevant support to help them to make change is crucial.

Both areas need more investment and resource to support people now and in the future. 💰

Not a pill for an ill but a lifestyle change for a better future. 💫

My work with the .moh programme has shown me how much people can achieve when they have the support and information they need. 💪🏼

What do you need to support a healthy future you?

I’ve been thinking about this quote ever since my awesome yoga teacher Zoe said it at the end one of her lush ‘Calm The Flow Down’ sessions. 🧘‍♀️

I found it quite profound at the time and it’s been on my mind ever since.

Then I was up north at the weekend, visiting elderly relatives 80 and 87….

Different families, lifestyles and upbringing but both doing remarkably well and still independent.

It felt even more poignant. I hope to one day be able to say the same about me and my partner. 👫

Having lost my parents in their early 70s to chronic conditions (PSP and Cancer), enjoying life and my own mortality sits regularly on my mind. 🧠

Not in a morbid way, but there’s a very conscious awareness that we’re not around forever and that maintaining health is important to the enjoyment of our later years.

It’s easy to ignore the long distant future and think I’ll deal with it when it comes. But when it comes to our health, what we do today, next week and next month directly impacts our ability to enjoy life to the max now AND in the future. ➡️

So taking time to look after our body is vital.

This doesn’t mean you have to suddenly start meditating everyday, eating plant based, running marathons, never eating anything enjoyable.

Its about becoming more aware of how we treat our body…

So have a think, maybe you could take a bit more time to:
🥘 Nourish yourself
🕰️ Invest time in the things that bring you joy
💨 Take a breath (or several) from the daily hamster wheel
👂 Listen to your body
💃 Be regularly active in a way that works for you

These aren’t the magic keys to longevity, but somethings that can help you drive that body enjoyably through life. 🤗

Rising rates of colon cancer in people under 55yrs old has made it into 👏

It’s reassuring to see this unsettling trend getting publicity. We should all pay attention to any signs, symptoms or changes in health and get them checked out - cancer is not a disease of the older generation.

What to look out for:

-> changes in bowel movements - regularity, consistency, colour
-> abdominal pain or discomfort
-> blood in your stool or on the paper - don’t just put it down to haemorrhoids
-> sudden weight loss
-> unexplained fatigue

There’s lots you can do to help reduce your risks…

✅ Eat plenty of fibre - recommendation is 30g per day
✅ Eat diversity of wholefoods
✅ Include pre and probiotic foods in your diet
✅ Reduce your toxic load - keep your cleaning, beauty and healthcare products natural and toxin free
✅ Eats lots of liver supporting foods - cruciferous vegetables and sulphur containing veg like onions and garlic
✅ Reduce inflammatory foods - fried, sugar, processed, smoked
✅ Ensure regular daily, full evacuation of the bowel

Most importantly if you’re not sure, get it checked out. The sooner amy cancer is picked up the better the potential outcome.

Thank you for reporting on the use of drugs to tackle obesity.

As someone who works to solve the root cause of health issues and spends 3-days a week supporting people with obesity, a drug is not the solution.

Anyone who has experience of extensive weight gain knows how many factors influence this. Sadly drugs like this are seen as a quick fix for people who desperately want to loose weight but when the drugs finish, unless the key issues are dealt with, the weight is likely to come back on.

We should be tackling obesity, and our general nutritional health, in multiple ways. For me this includes:

🥗 Better education on food and nutrition
👩🏽‍🍳 Support and education in how to cook and prepare healthier food
🧠 Psycological support to work through emotional issues which play a big role
✅ Postive reinforcement for people on the journey and removal of stigmas associated with weight gain (and weight loss)

Better education on food and nutrition
👩🏽‍🍳 Support and education in how to cook and prepare healthier food (especially on a budget)
🧠 Psycological support to work through emotional issues which play a big role
✅ Postive reinforcement for people on the journey and removal of stigmas associated with weight gain (and weight loss)
⏳Longer programme support beyond 12-weeks (the current timescale for weight loss support)
⚡️Earlier interventions such as broader exercise /movement options for young people to engaged with early on
🥦 Removal of food poverty so everyone has access to healthy food options

The list goes on and is definiltey not exhaustive. Just goes to show how many things play a part….a drug is not the long term solution and we should be promoting what is better for people longterm.

Why is sleep so crucial?
Did you know lack of sleep…

☠️ is the biggest risk factors in all cause mortality
💥 the most common cause of car crashes
📝 impairs our cognitive function
🍔 increases our risk of obesity
👟 reduces our core balance and exercise capacity
🧠 increases risk of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s

The recently added shift work as a carcinogen because of the impact sleep patterns have on risk of cancer…

Sleep is precious, but when we’re busy it’s the one thing that gets squeezed.

Sleep expert ’s latest interview with Joe Rogan is fascinating. 2-hrs of invaluable insights on why we sleep and what happens when we don’t get enough. Thanks .for.sport for the recommendation!

If you haven’t got 2hrs to listen here’s some tips to getting the recommended 7-9hrs:

💤 have a daily sleep / wake routine for our body to recognise
💤 remove any bright / blue light from your environment at least 2-hrs before bed. It stops our body producing the sleep hormone melatonin.
💤 make your room as dark as possible - try a sleep mask if your room is light
💤 try to have your room cooler as this triggers our body into sleep mode. A hot bath can help this process along as our body temp drops when we get out.
💤 alcohol reduces our REM sleep which means we don’t feel as rested the next day
💤 don’t go to sleep hungry as it can make us think we’re in starvation mode which makes us more alert.

Sleep can be a real struggle. Hormones, nutrient depletion, hyper stimulation, slow metabolism of adrenaline can all affect our sleep.

It’s important to understand the factors most affecting you so you can work on improving the right thing.

What’s your evening routine like?

Fascinating report from - This person has been suffering fatigue, low immunity and low mood since a short illness in October. 🤒

Just the summary page shows they are struggling with…
💥 Oxidative Stress (inflammation)
🔋 Mitochondrial Dysfunction (broken batteries)…

No wonder they feel so fatigued and run down. 😴

Now we can focus on specific nutrient depletion and antioxidant support to help healing and hopefully get that energy back! 🤞🏼

Post-viral fatigue is tough to deal with, feeling tired and run down all the time and wondering if you will feel better the next day or not.

With so many influencing factors it can be feel like a long journey to recovery. I feel very humbled to be in a situation where I can help people who are living this to feel better!

8 ways to help reduce your toxic load. ⛔️

An interesting article on the Guardian today! Growing concerns of the impact of environmental toxins on the rising number of neurological conditions such as Dementia, Alzheimer’s and ALS.

What can you do to protect yourself?

🍱 Don’t heat or store food from plastic containers, it leeches into our food. Store any food in metal or glass food boxes as acid in foods can also create leeching.

🌽 Buy Organic as much as you can - veg, fruit, grass-fed meat and avoid farmed fish to reduce intake of chemicals used in the farming processes.

🪴 Get some air filtering plants in your house - Peace Lily, Snake Plants, Spider plants and Golden Pathos examples of good house plants and they look great too!

🌬 If you can, invest in a small air filter for your bedroom. When you sleep your liver is working hard to clear out, clean air means your not adding additional burden as you sleep. I use a air filter.

💄 Check the contents of your beauty products. Lots of chemicals and plastics which can pass through into our system. , , , are all great brands for cleaner products.

🧸 Check what products are made from. Sofas, cushions, duvets, toys, teddy’s and other household items can contain all sorts of toxins. Many toys are made from BPA which we can’t breakdown and it impacts our hormones (and the environment).

💧 Use a BPA Free water bottle to drink from, avoid plastic bottles as much as you can - definitely don’t reuse plastic bottles as it leeches into the water over time.

🧅 Make sure your eating foods which support your liver and you’re having a daily bowel movement. Bitter foods, cruciferous vegetables, green leafy veg and sulphur containing foods - garlic onion etc.

Anything you can do to avoid use of plastics and toxins can help you and the environment. What can you start doing today?

It plays an important role in our menstrual cycle and in maintaining pregnancy but it also plays a role in many other functions.

👉🏼 Helps modulate immune function
👉🏼 Decreases inflammation
👉🏼 Prevents auto-immune disease
👉🏼 Decreases risk of breast cancer
👉🏼 Builds bone and lightens menstrual flow
👉🏼 Calms nervous system and stabilise HPA axis
👉🏼 Increases duration of deep sleep

So as I edge ever closer into the pre-menopause (yes it’s a thing!), I know my levels will be dropping.

But other things can cause low levels, (contributing to oestrogen dominance), even before we reach our 40s. Such as:
❌ Too much stress
❌ Excess body fat
❌ Endocrine disrupting products - toxins, chemicals, plastics
❌ Low intake of hormone supporting foods - eg good cholesterol is needed for hormone production.
❌ High sugar intake
❌ Alcohol intake

So you might now be thinking…”how do I know if my progesterone is low?”

Some symptoms can include:
✅ Heavy me**es
✅ Spotting between periods
✅ Sore breasts
✅ disrupted sleep
✅ Tender breasts
✅ Vaginal dryness
✅ Depression and low mood
✅ Low Libido
✅ Hot flushes

Other things can contribute to these symptoms, so if your concerned or experiencing any please speak to your healthcare practitioner. 🏥

Good hormone testing such as can provide a great picture of hormone health.

What could you change in your daily life to help support your hormone production?

I’ve been analysising an GI Ecologix test report today to create a client protocol. ✍️

Always fascinating to dig into how individual microbes impact our health. A reminder of how important food diversity is in supporting our gut health and our overall physical and mental health.

💡 Did you know that many of gut microbes have been linked to increasing or decreasing risks for various health outcomes? Including Diabetes, Crohns, Diverticulosis, Parkinson’s, CVD, Obesity, non-fatty alcoholic Liver disease, cancer, inflammation, autoimmune conditions, mental health… 🆘

Symptoms of an in-balanced digestive system can include:
🚽 constipation (pooing less than daily or incomplete evacuation)
💩 diarrhoea
🎈 bloating
💨 excess wind
🔥 heartburn and reflux
💤 fatigue
🧠 brain fog….. plus many more.

Our digestive health really is the foundation to our overall health. How’s your digestion doing?

Park life! Great for many in this weather, especially if you don’t have outside space but it can mean snotty noses and itchy eyes as histamine levels (the thing that makes us itchy) trigger allergic responses.

Did you know hydration affects our histamine levels? As well as our blood pressure.

Good hydration = less histaminergic affects and less risk of high BP.

So even more reason to keep the fluids flowing in this weather! 💦

And watch the coffee and the booze dehydration that will also affect it. Anything fermented like wine and beer contains histamine which can contribute to our allergies.

❤️ water!
