Our founder, Mark Morton, came to journaling after over 30 years of suffering general anxiety and depression, including social anxiety, self-doubt, and a lack of self-esteem. This affected his mental and physical health, and he spent most days with some form of symptoms, from mild to severe.
Mark βdealtβ with his issues internally in shame and silence. He grew up at a time when mental health issues werenβt talked about, where a man would be told to βMan up!β or βGet a grip!β; where you had to be βstrongβ and not show emotion or pain. He hid his inner turmoil behind a facade and internal walls he had built to βprotectβ himself. To the outside world, he was projecting an impression of calm and control, but underneath was a different story.
Sound familiar?
Mark eventually decided to seek help. In his quest for peace and understanding, he has received therapy and practised techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, yoga and exercise, and of course, journaling. Whilst he still has difficult days, journaling is a valuable tool for expressing himself, working through things, and finding a way of letting things go.
