😴 Happy sleep awareness day - How do you sleep?

Cracking the code on sleep starts with your circadian rhythm. The sleep-wake cycle is one of the most clear and critical examples of the importance of circadian rhythms. During the day, light exposure causes the master clock to send signals that generate alertness and help keep us awake and active.

🔆When properly aligned, a circadian rhythm can promote consistent and restorative sleep.

🔆 Circadian rhythms exist in all types of organisms. For example, they help flowers open and close at the right time and keep nocturnal animals from leaving their shelter

🔆 In people, circadian rhythms coordinate mental and physical systems throughout the body. The digestive system produces proteins to match the typical timing of meals, and the endocrine system regulates hormones to suit normal energy expenditure.

⏰ As night falls, the master clock initiates the production of melatonin, a hormone that promotes sleep, and then keeps transmitting signals that help us stay asleep through the night - staying asleep helps repair our bodies.

⚠️ It won’t send that signal if your staring at a screen - why would it? It still thinks you’re in midday sun. Here’s where the problem starts. You can still watch TV but
wear blue blockers at night when working on a screen or watching movies. Trust me my sleep statistics are at 90% when I blueblock.

I absolutely love blueblocking glasses there the only pair I’ve found that cover the whole eye.

Work with me and I’ll show you tips and tricks for optimising your health and yes staying young.

My favourite poem about the body.

Osip Mandelshtam
A Body Was Given To Me

A body was given to me — what to do with it,
So unique and so much my own?

For the quiet joy of breathing and living,
Who is it, tell me, that I must thank?

I am the gardener, I am the flower as well,
In the dungeon of the world I am not alone.

On the glass of eternity has already settled
My breathing, my warmth.

A pattern prints itself on it,
Unrecognizable of late.

Let the lees of the moment trickle down —
The lovely pattern must not be wiped away.

🪴 Do you have plants in your home?

Plants make me so happy and over the years I’ve got better at looking after them. Strange how I’m pretty good at looking after myself too these days.

Plants create a beautiful atmosphere even a 1989 NASA study found that such plants were able to reduce indoor air pollutants such as benzene and formaldehyde, usually found in home furniture, carpets and cleaning chemicals..

Plants may make you feel less stressed and more creative.

Part of my wellness programme advises clients on the best plants for the home.

Adrenal Cocktail

An adrenal cocktail is a healthy drink that uses certain vitamins and minerals to support what is already too low. Low aldosterone can tank sodium first. The longer low aldosterone goes on, then potassium can fall next. Another direct way to find out if you would benefit from the drink is directly test your sodium and potassium.

The adrenal cocktail is used to support healthy but stressed adrenal function. The recipe has many variations, my favourite is

1/2 organic blood orange pressed
filtered water
2 Tulsi Tea bags
1/2 a tea spoon of cream of tartar
🤏 ring pinch sea or Himalayan salt

One a day.

⚠️ Avoid if you have high blood pressure

Always check with a health practitioner if you have any medical conditions.

Great recovery after a sweaty workout and supporting the adrenals in the current climate we all need this.

🦋It is estimated that one in 20 people in the UK have a thyroid problem, but that statistic could be much higher with many individuals unaware they have an issue. This disorder can affect almost any age group.

📖 Medical research indicates that more than anything, our lifestyle and dietary choices may be to blame.

Coffee & Thyroid 🔗☕️

☕️Causes a sudden spike in blood sugar. Studies conducted have shown that coffee increases blood sugar levels. 🤪This exhausts the adrenals and leads to thyroid problems in sensitive individuals.

⚠️ This is especially bad if you have hypoglycaemia as it can leave you feeling nervous and anxious through the day. Also reaching for more sugary foods and spiking blood sugar levels up and down all day. Awful for weight loss 🙄

☕️Interferes in secretion and absorption of hormones
Coffee affects the function of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal gland trio. These in turn affect your thyroid health. Drinking several cups of coffee stimulates excess secretion of epinephrine and cortisol which are stress hormones. This leaves your body in constant state of anxiety. Moreover, for those who take hormone replacement medication, coffee can inhibit the conversion and absorption of hormones.

Coffee stimulates the adrenals to secrete cortisol. This is why you feel a sudden burst of energy after your morning cup. An excess of caffeine combined with a high carb diet can wear out your adrenal gland. This slows down the thyroid gland and is one of the primary causes of Hypothyroidism.

Leads to oxidative damage
Coffee is high inflammatory. This means that it causes damage on a cellular level. Certain foods are more inflammatory and they make our cells burn and die out faster. Inflammation leads to diabetes, brittle skin and nails, muscle cramps, insomnia, and thyroid problems.

☕️ is also acidic and if taken on an empty stomach, can begin to damage your intestinal and stomach lining.

Coffee also causes insomnia if your struggling to sleep as night. Ditch it!

Coffee does have benefits but for myself who has suffered with an under active thyroid - also a slow metaboliser. It’s no longer part of my optimisation programme.

Is Your Gut Healthy?

Is your Brain functioning well?

🥸How to tell

🌸 Think of the gut as a beautiful garden flourishing with everything it needs. It’s like it’s own eco system and it communicates constantly with the rest of your body. Especially the brain and provides the chemicals needed to power your brain 🧠

When all is well - you are well. Imagine something gets in the way and disrupts the garden it may even dampen down the good stuff and start growing yeast, parasites, bacteria it may even start letting junk in like heavy metals - pollutants - hormones - drugs. The garden is not going to flourish and the chemicals you needed are now damaged the brain becomes upset and the messages no longer sync and flow..

What happens next...

⚠️ Gut inflammation levels rise, digestion and absorption of food is compromised, immune function, and short chain fatty acids, which are healthy products of bacterial fermentation and are needed to fight cancer, calm inflammation, and fuel a healthy metabolism all become damaged.

You get ill

In my clinic I use functional tests - stool tests ( sent individually to you for convenience) you send it away and the lab sends me the information I need to work out the health puzzle for you 🧩
