What are my anaesthetic choices during surgery?
With modern advancements in medicine, a general anaesthetic is no longer necessary to allow a patient to be unaware of their surgery.
Sedation or 'awake surgery' is a great alternative as it avoids some of the common side effects of general anaesthetic including post-operative nausea, vomiting and a 'hangover effect', allowing patients to wake up feeling fresh and normal.
Some patients prefer to be completely knocked out. A deep sedation can keep you asleep and comfortable, yet still rousable, or a milder sedation can make you feel drowsy and relaxed.
At the other end of the scale, some patients opt for a very mild sedation, or none altogether, preferring to be wide awake during surgery, and sometimes even have me talk them through it!
In addition to whichever form of sedation you choose, you will also have an ankle block to numb the nerves around your ankle, making your foot numb and pain-free. This can last for up to 6 hours after your surgery, after which any discomfort can be managed with take-home medication.
I am happy to be flexible with anaesthetic choices, as are my anaesthetists, based on what you are comfortable with.
