Every door you want to walk through in your career starts with the investment you make in yourself.

That investment doesn’t only mean formal training (though that matters too). It’s also the way you:
🔹 Build meaningful connections.
🔹 Strengthen your leadership qualities.
🔹 Keep learning and improving, even in small ways.

These investments compound over time, and they’re what add up to helping you unlock new opportunities in your health/social care journey.

At BWIC, we believe growth isn’t something you do alone.
With the right resources, support, and community, you can go further and open doors you didn’t even know were there.

These 3 keys that can help open doors in your career.

At BWIC, we’re here to make sure you’re not on this journey alone. From resources to oppourtunities and more, we’re building a space where Black women across the sector can grow together.

A new month is another chance to step into the opportunities that are meant for you.

In care, opportunities don’t just happen, they’re unlocked through learning, visibility, and the right connections.

At BWIC, we believe every Black woman in care deserves to be seen, supported, and equipped to rise.

This month, take that step: apply for that role, ask about that training, connect with that mentor.
Your next opportunity might be closer than you think.

Follow us to stay connected to resources, networks, and opportunities created for you.

Many of us hold back because of stories we’ve been told or tell ourselves...

“I’m not a manager, so I’m not a leader.”
“I need decades first.”
“Leaders must never get it wrong.”

Leadership isn't limited to any of that.

Leadership is how you show up, not just what’s on your badge.
You don’t need perfection... You need clarity, courage, and community.

Real leaders protect dignity, model boundaries, and lift others as they rise.
Influence grows when you mentor, advocate, and improve the everyday.

What’s one myth you’ve unlearned about leadership in your role?

Share it below, your insight might be exactly what someone else needs today.

"15 years in the NHS. ILR secured. Still picking up bank shifts…”

For many in health & social care, this isn’t exaggeration, it’s reality.

Taking extra shifts doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you’re finding a way to survive in a system that hasn’t always valued the people who keep it running.

But again, should resilience always have to look like exhaustion?
🔹 What would it take for care staff to thrive, not just survive?
🔹 What would it take for experienced workers to truly rest when they need to without worrying about the bills?

How do you feel about the pressure of bank shifts?

Leadership in health and social care is not about titles or positions, it’s about how we show up. For women, especially women in care, leadership often looks like:

🔸 Holding teams together in high-pressure moments.
🔸 Advocating for dignity and fairness in spaces where voices are often overlooked.
🔸 Balancing professional responsibilities with compassion, because care is never “just a job.”
🔸 Leading by example, even when recognition is slow to come.

The truth is, leadership in this sector is deeply relational.
It’s in how you mentor the next carer, how you speak up for those without a voice, how you inspire others through resilience and empathy.

At BWIC, we believe leadership is not only about where you’re going but also about who you’re bringing along with you. That’s why we exist, to equip Black women in health and social care with the skills, networks, and confidence to lead boldly at every level.

💙 Now we’d love to hear from you: In your role, what does leadership mean to you?

Drop your thoughts in the comments, your perspective could inspire someone else this week.
