What a Tuesday! Today we talked about the power of good communication to change the expereince of those living with Dementia.

We love a bit of a feedback - and a client mentioned that a member of staff had asked his Mum how she usually had her lunch. The member of staff had been briefed on this and was really just chatting to the client who has dementia but presents well. It's a good example of where good intentions to offer choice and engagement can come across is a different way - the family felt the language could have been different because Mum didn't know the answer. So we did what we always do - we took it back to the team meeting and talked about how we could learn from this and improve the experience for our clients.

Today we role played questions, we tried rephrasing them and we tried finding all the ways we could say No! to a question. It was really fun to watch people have to think about how they communicate.

Of course we always have lunch - today we had Pizza, Easter cakes and hot cross buns before everyone left with a delicious Easter Egg! We even sent some on the staff doing our live in care packages to they didn't miss out!

International Women's Day 2026

Recently we visited the beautiful chapel at St Thomas's Hospital. Built at at time where people valued the benefits of rest and recuperation - it was striking how many of the memorials paid tribute to the amazing women who have gone before.

Sarah Wardroper - Sarah Elizabeth Wardroper was commemorated as a pioneering nursing leader who helped transform hospital care in the nineteenth century. As matron of St Thomas’ Hospital and a close collaborator of Florence Nightingale, she helped establish the Nightingale Training School for Nurses and spent decades training professional nurses. The memorial describes her as “a faithful servant of God and man” and “the working leader in a great reform quietly and peaceably pursued by which the care of the sick took its right place as a high and holy calling.” It records that for “33 years Mrs Wardroper rendered faithful service as Matron of this hospital,” guiding the training of nurses who would continue the work of modern nursing. The dedication concludes with the biblical reminder of her compassionate service: “I was sick and ye visited me… Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren ye have done it unto me.”

Florence Nightingale helped transform modern nursing through her work at St Thomas' Hospital, where she founded the Nightingale Training School for Nurses in 1860. Her leadership helped establish nursing as a respected profession for women and improved hospital care around the world. Reflecting the spirit of International Women's Day, Nightingale believed strongly in women’s ability to create change, writing: “I attribute my success to this: I never gave or took any excuse.” Her work continues to inspire generations of women in healthcare and beyond. ✨

✝️Today marks Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the season of Lent - 40 days of prayer, fasting, reflection, and renewal leading up to Easter. At Mass today our Priest spoke of giving, charity and service. He stressed this wasn't about money - but perhaps as simple as finding time for a cup of tea with someone who is lonely. This felt very relevant for us - as a service that see the quiet lives of many people.

🪻It was a special service for me (Anne-Marie) - because there were three generations of us together. Some of you will know that my Dad has dementia. He's spending half-term with us this week and Church today was one of a selection of activites we've planned out.

⛪️In his early years, he actually considered the priesthood, so the actions and repetition of the Catholic Mass are deep engrained. They are familar and comforting, something that is true in so many Irish Catholic families.

🍀Understanding someone's background, where they are come from and the life they have lived is so important to making sure care is kind, responsive and culturally approriate. Dad would never ask to go to Mass now - it doesn't occur to him. But he enjoyed it and so did I.

📷️Just to add - I asked him if it was ok to share our photo and his diagnosis. He replied "Thanks for asking - appreciate it. I won't remember anyway so fill your boots!" 😆

We regularly bring together our team for a Lunch & Learn session - last week we talked about Roles, Responsibilities and Conduct. We do these sessions about topics that are relevant at the time or that we think we help our staff to deliver a better quality service.

In this session, we looked at key documents like a code of conduct, staff handbook and our mission statement to help us focus on what shapes client experience.

Would you have been able to answer our quiz questions!
