It needs to be said: having a real, clinical mental health diagnosis is not the same as being neurodivergent.

Somewhere along the way, the terms started to get blurred and for some, it’s become a convenient label to gain attention, sympathy, or preferential treatment, bullying and harassment or just plain meanness and nastiness. But those of us who KNOW the difference through professionalism, WE SEE YOU. You are not fooling anyone. You are NOT hiding in plain sight. You are up front and centre and it's shameful.

Here’s the truth:
👉🏾 Neurodivergence (like autism, ADHD, dyslexia) is NOT interchangeable with depression, anxiety, or PTSD.
👉🏾 Both deserve understanding, support, and respect, but they are not the same.
👉🏾 Misusing these terms dilutes the reality for those who genuinely live with them and makes it harder for professionals, workplaces, and communities to provide appropriate help.

When we self-diagnose with trendy labels or misuse clinical ones to excuse bad behaviour, we’re not only being careless, we’re undermining those who have fought hard for awareness and recognition.

✨ Respect the words. Respect the people. Respect the lived experiences.

Let’s keep language honest, accurate, and responsible.

Today is National Counsellor’s Day—and I’m taking a moment to reflect with deep gratitude.

Being a counsellor isn’t just a career. It’s a calling. It’s sitting in silence with someone’s sorrow, holding space for transformation, and witnessing the quiet courage it takes to show up and feel. I’ve sat across from people in their darkest nights and watched them rise with new light. I’ve witnessed them stuck and feeling hopeless, to unrecognisable defeat and triumph.

To my fellow counsellors, you are healers, anchors, and beacons in a world that sometimes forgets how much listening matters. To every client who’s trusted me with their truth, thank you. You’ve taught me as much as I’ve offered. My 4 years’ training, continuing supervision and CPD was worth every pound, every moment, and every challenge that it presents. It’s given me life and continues to feed my soul. I sleep at night knowing that I am doing my best to make the world a better place, just as you are seeking help to contribute to that outcome.

And if you’re someone who’s ever sat across from a therapist, know that your vulnerability is strength. Your growth is sacred.
This work humbles me every day. I’m proud to be part of this profession and even prouder of every soul who chooses healing.
