Exam stress isn't 'in their head.' It's a full-body physiological response - and understanding it changes how we support young people.

'Just calm down.' Has it ever worked? For you, or anyone you've said it to? Here's why - and what actually helps.

The problem with 'calm down' is that it bypasses the body entirely. When we're flooded, particularly with fluctuating hormones, the rational brain is offline. You cannot think your way out of a stress response. You have to move through it.

Tools that genuinely help:
➡️A slow extended exhale (activates the vagus nerve)
➡️Body-based grounding
➡️hypnosis-based nervous system reset.

These are not simply relaxation techniques. They're clinical tools.

Not all stress tools are equal. Some help in the moment. Some build resilience over time. Here's how to use the right one at the right time.

In the moment - clinical breathwork (vagus nerve activation, parasympathetic reset).
That night - clinical hypnosis for sleep (targeted nervous system work, not simply relaxation audio).
Over time - mindfulness-based cognitive tools (shifts the relationship with stress, not just the experience of it).

All three are available on the Menopause Meditations app, developed over 30 years of clinical practice - download from the App Store or Google Play store!

This year's Stress Awareness Month theme is .

I've been thinking about what that means specifically for women in midlife.

It isn't 'think positive' or 'do more yoga.' Being the change at menopause looks like choosing sleep over scrolling. Saying no to what depletes you. Asking for support without apologising for it. Treating your nervous system as though it deserves care - because it does.

Small, consistent shifts. Evidence-based tools. A different relationship with your own body. That's what I help women build.

If you'd like to explore what that looks like for you, DM me or email info@harleystreetconsulting.com,

Poor sleep leads to lower resilience, which leads to higher stress, which leads to worse sleep. Does this feel familiar?

Breaking that cycle starts during the day, not just at night. Begin by noticing your stress levels - are your shoulders tense, your jaw tight, or your breathing shallow? Small moments of awareness can make a big difference. Managing stress throughout the day is known to support better sleep quality and overall wellbeing.

Making time to process what’s on your mind by writing things down or focusing on what you can control can help create mental space. Gentle movement can also be a powerful way to release built-up tension.

For extra support, the Menopause Meditations app offers guided meditations designed to promote relaxation, calm the mind and support better sleep - available on the App Store and Google Play!

'I thought I was falling apart. I was actually in perimenopause.'

These are some of the most common things women share with me. And they arrive, too often, long before anyone mentions hormones. Many of the emotional, mental and physical changes women experience can feel overwhelming, confusing and isolating, especially when there’s no clear explanation.

'Just do your best.'
'Don't worry.'
'Other children manage.'

They’re said with good intentions - but sometimes, the wrong words can unintentionally add pressure or dismiss how a young person is really feeling.

You've heard it. 'Just manage your stress.' But when your nervous system is running on depleted oestrogen and disrupted sleep, stress lands differently.

This April, for Stress Awareness Month, I want to talk about something real: the intersection of stress and menopause, and what it actually takes to feel like yourself again. Not willpower. Not pushing through. Evidence-based tools that work with your biology, not against it.
